Swimming

Edison’s girls’ team easily captured a championship and Edison and Los Alamitos shared the boys’ title Friday at the Sunset League Swimming and Diving Championships at Newport Harbor High.

Los Alamitos was second, Fountain Valley third, Newport Harbor fourth, Marina fifth and Huntington Beach sixth in the girls’ varsity standings.

Newport Harbor was third, Fountain Valley fourth, Huntington Beach fifth and Marina sixth in the boys’ varsity standings.

“It was exciting to see both our varsity boys and girls teams vying for a league championship,” Edison co-Coach Diggy Riley said. “Our boys’ disqualification in the opening medley relay took the wind out of our sails, but they still swam hard and earned a co-championship. Our girls led from start to finish in their fourth straight league championship.

“The majority of our varsity swimmers who qualified for CIF are just now feeling the effect of a taper. We were physically and mentally tired at league, and now the second season really beings.”

Marina’s Nick Soedel won the boys’ 50-yard freestyle in a league-record time of 20.57 seconds and also won the 100 free in 44.87.

Results from Wednesday’s CIF prelims at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool weren’t available at press time.
