Marina High honored in ceremony at Dodger Stadium

The CIF Southern Section and Los Angeles City Section, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, presented the 29th annual Kenneth Fagans “Shake for Sportsmanship” Awards ceremony prior to the start of Monday’s game between the Dodgers and Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium.

Marina High was selected by league representatives as the winner of this year’s award from the Sunset League. Softball player Kristen Struett represented the school at Monday’s awards presentation and accepted a commemorative plaque for the school

The CIF-SS presented the following criteria guidelines to leagues in their selection process for determining a winner from their respective league: participation, enthusiasm, behavior at home and away games, treatment of opponents and treatment of contest officials. The criteria not only pertained to participating athletes but was also based on the conduct of school band members, drill teams, pep squads, cheerleaders and student rooting sections.

Struett was selected by Marina girls’ Athletic Director Michelle Spencer to represent Marina.

“Her attitude and behavior on and off the field are to be commended,” Spencer said. “Kristen is a four-year varsity player who is a true team player. She was Sunset League MVP pitcher in 2010 and has taken on a new roll in the outfield this year because that is what our team needed. Not many people would embrace change like that with a positive attitude.”

The award is named for former CIF-SS Commissioner, the late Kenny Fagans, who served as commissioner from 1954 to 1975.

Samuelson, Garrity jerseys retired

All-CIF basketball players Bonnie Samuelson and Dylan Garrity of Edison had her jerseys officially retired Friday during an all-school assembly, Edison Athletic Director Rich Boyce said. The assembly began with the hanging of a CIF girls’ basketball championship banner won by the Chargers in March and the presentation of championship rings to each team member. Samuelson and Garrity then came out, along with former standouts Michelle Hennessey (class of 1987) and Marie Philman (class of 1995) — who previously had had their numbers retired — and the foursome pulled a string to reveal their four jerseys.

They are the only four jerseys to be retired for both the girls’ and boys’ basketball programs.

“It was very nice to have the former retirees here with their families, as well as Bonnie’s and Dylan’s families,” Boyce said.

On Saturday, Garrity went on to be crowned prom king and Sydney Lara from the girls’ basketball team was crowned prom queen.

Locals earn high rankings

Three local prep teams continue to reside at or near the top of their respective CIF Southern Section polls this week.

In baseball, Edison heads the Division 1 poll.

In softball, Edison is ranked fourth in Division 1. Esperanza again is No. 1 followed by Los Alamitos and Etiwanda. Ocean View is ranked third in Division 4. Aquinas and Segerstrom, a Golden West League rival of Ocean View’s, are first and second, respectively, in the poll.

Edison youth swim program underway

A swim program for middle school youth run by Edison High swim co-Coach Diggy Riley is underway this week at Edison.

The program, in its second year, emphasizes stroke work and endurance in workouts that mirror those of the Edison swim program and present local youth the opportunity to train with one of the top swim and water polo coaches in Orange County.
