Edison edges Vikings in 13

In a key Sunset League softball game where the winner would keep pace with league-leading Los Alamitos, it took 13 innings to decide Tuesday’s game between Edison and Marina, and it was the visiting Chargers who survived to score a 4-3 victory over the Vikings.

Junior Nicole Zapotoczny’s single in the top of the 13th scored junior Maddy Hickman for the winning run as Edison fought back from a 2-0 deficit through three innings. The teams were tied at 2-2 through seven and each scored a run in the eighth. Senior Jamie Sullivan’s first of three hits on the day, a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, gave Marina a 2-0 lead.

Senior Ally Hecht started on the mound but sophomore Sammy Cordova (5-0) came on in the fourth inning to get the win, striking out 15 along the way. Marina freshman Tera Blanco (10-1) suffered her first loss. Each team had 10 hits.

The win allowed Edison to improve to 4-1 in league and Marina slipped to 3-2, both losses coming against Edison. The Chargers (21-3 overall) trail Los Alamitos (5-0) in the standings. The Griffins on Tuesday edged Fountain Valley, 5-4, in another epic, 13-inning game.

Edison last week went to Nevada for the Las Vegas Centennial Spring Jamboree and won the three-day tournament that concluded Saturday. The Chargers went 6-1 at the event to win their third tournament title of the season. They previously won the Woodbridge and Laguna Hills tournaments. Junior Jessica Plaza hit six home runs in the tournament including a two-run shot that sailed over the scoreboard in a game against El Camino.

During the tournament, Edison scored 61 runs, had 12 home runs among 88 hits, had its pitchers strike out 67 batters and Plaza was named tournament MVP.

“The girls came together with a dynamite spirit that allowed their amazing softball talents to shine through,” Edison Coach Kendra Rosales said. “As a whole, our team was explosive on offense, pitch-perfect on the mound and dominant on the field. It is truly a special experience to watch these 13 ladies compete.

“We are very excited for the second half of the Sunset League.”

Both Edison and Marina continue Sunset play at 3:15 Thursday , the Chargers at Fountain Valley and the Vikings at Newport Harbor.

Fountain Valley: The Barons (2-3) pushed Sunset League leader Los Alamitos (5-0) to the brink Tuesday but fell in 13 innings to the host Griffins who got the win on a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the 13th.

Junior Carissa Rivera threw all 13 innings for the Barons and recorded 17 strikeouts. Senior Allison Lang homered twice and drove in four runs and sophomore Khailey Campos had three hits for Fountain Valley which hosts Edison at 3:15 p.m. Thursday .

Huntington Beach: The Oilers got a complete-game one-hitter from freshman Micaela Vierra and downed visiting Newport Harbor, 3-0, in Sunset League play Tuesday ). Coach Jeff Forsberg said the win was the first league win for the program since 2006.

Vierra gave up a single to the first batter she faced but then went on to register 10 strikeouts and shutdown the Sailors. Offensively for Huntington, Justice Walker had a two- out home run in the third inning to end a scoreless game. Walker, Vicky Galasso and Jillian Martinez each had two hits.

The Oilers are now 1-4 in league and 11-12 overall.

“It’s been a long time coming for that Sunset League win, but we are getting consistent top-of- the-lineup production from Jillian (Martinez) and Vicky (Galasso),” Forsberg said. “Vicky’s leadership has been a key. And Micaela (Vierra) has been a confident pitcher over the last three weeks despite being a freshman in a very tough league.”

The game was part of the National Foundations for Cancer Research’s campaign, “Beat Cancer with a Bat.” Proceeds from snack sales and a 50/50 raffle went to the NFCR. Forsberg said that $496 was raised for cancer research.

During spring break, Huntington traveled to Santa Maria for the Best of the West Tournament where the Oilers went 3-2. They defeated St. Joseph’s of Santa Maria, 2-1, in the third-place game. Martinez scored the winning run in the sixth inning and Vierra threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.

During the tournament, Vierra threw 24 innings and struck out 31 batters and recorded three victories. She and Martinez, who hit .357 and scored five runs in five games, were named to the all-tournament team.

Ocean View: In a battle for first place in the Orange Coast League, the Seahawks took a 1-0 lead on Segerstrom, but the visiting Jaguars scored the game’s final three runs to come away with a 3-1 victory Friday. Senior Celine Fuentes hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give the Seahawks the early, 1-0 lead.

Ocean View, now 3-1 in league, hosts Orange at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
