Three-way tie for first

The Sunset League baseball title chase took another dramatic turn last week, the results of which left three teams atop the league standings.

When last week’s two-game schedule concluded Friday, Edison, Marina and Los Alamitos all had a piece of the Sunset lead, each with a 6-3 record.

Ocean View continued to surge in the Golden West League race by twice defeating Orange in the past week.

Local teams were scheduled to play Wednesday, but scores weren’t available at press time.

Edison

The Chargers split two games last week against rival Fountain Valley. They started the series with a 6-0 road win April 18. Freshman Kevin Ando went three for three with a double and run batted in, sophomore Brian Schales went two for three with a double and two RBIs and senior Timmy Lopes was two for three with a double. Juniors Joey DeMarco and Jake Lesinski each had a hit and drove in a run and junior Tyler Jones improved to 3-0.

On Friday, Schales doubled twice but Edison was shut out, 1-0, by the Barons in nine innings. The Chargers played Long Beach Poly on Saturday and scored an 8-5 victory over the Jackrabbits.

The Chargers play at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Huntington Beach.

Fountain Valley

The Barons went 1-1 against Edison last week and on Saturday knocked off Beckman, the second-ranked team in Division 3, 7-4, to win the Beach Pit Classic tournament. In the final, junior Jordan Lucio went three for three with three RBIs. Junior Monty Plattner, the third of three pitchers for the Barons, threw three innings and got the win to improve to 4-0.

The win put Fountain Valley (13-7, 3-6 league) at 10-1 in nonleague games this year.

In the top of the ninth of Friday’s game at Edison, Brand doubled and sophomore Dillon Persinger doubled home the winning run for a 1-0 triumph. Senior Tanner Brown thew a five-hit shutout and Lucio and Mike Hickman both had two hits.

Fountain Valley took the season series from Edison, 2-1. The Barons host Marina at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

“Hopefully, playing well against Edison and Beckman will give us the confidence we need to compete well in the remaining six Sunset League games,” Barons Coach Ron LaRuffa said. “Each one is a do-or-die situation for us if we expect to make the playoffs.”

Huntington Beach

The Oilers suffered a pair of tough losses last week to Los Alamitos. The first was a 2-0 defeat April 18. Seniors Kevin Heesacker and Christian Abe combined to toss a four-hitter, but Griffins’ pitcher Greg Harris limited the Oilers to three hits.

On Friday, Los Al scored two runs on three hits in the opening inning to record a 2-1 win. Huntington scored its only run in the sixth inning and left the tying run on base in the seventh.

The two setbacks put the Oilers at 5-4 in league and 13-4 overall.

Marina

The Vikings posted a pair of big wins last week against Newport Harbor.

The first was a 12-1 victory April 18. Junior Max Gibbs got the pitching win, junior Jake Bauers hit a solo home run and junior Jake Arledge hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs.

Marina came back Friday to take a 10-3 victory. Bauers hit a three-run home run, Arledge, Tyler Mildenberg, Trevor Zeller and Brett Lynn had extra-base hits, and senior Austin Baker had an RBI single for the Vikings.

The Vikings travel Friday for a 3:15 p.m. game at Fountain Valley. They also visit Edison for a key 3:15 p.m. game Wednesday.

“This team (Marina) has lost five one-run ballgames, so we are in each game,” Vikings Coach Bob Marshall said. “It is in the hands of our team to get the clutch hit or make the clutch play. I expect this will be the case with Fountain Valley, and we will have to have those impact plays if we are going to beat Fountain Valley.”

Ocean View

The Seahawks scored an 8-2 win over Orange on Friday to follow up on a 5-1 win against the Panthers on April 18 in Golden West League action.

In the April 18 win, junior Luke Fell registered his first pitching win. Fell also had a big day at the plate with two hits and three RBIs. Senior Timmy Robinson continued his torrid offensive efforts by going three for four with an RBI and junior John Giancone doubled twice in two at-bats.

Seahawks Coach Shane Borowski wasn’t able to coach Friday’s game against Orange because of the birth of the first child for he and his wife, Kimberly Ohara-Borowsk. Their daughter, Evynn Bailey Yukiko Borowski, was born at 5:15 a.m. Friday. Borowski said it was the first time in his coaching career, Little League included, that he has missed a game.

“Well worth it,” he exclaimed.

Under the guidance of assistant coaches Patrick Johnson and Steve Christy on Friday, the Seahawks rolled to an 8-2 win. Senior Jonah Desjardin allowed one earned run and scattered seven hits for a complete-game victory that moved his record to 2-1. In the process, Borowski said that Desjardin broke the school record for pitching consecutive scoreless innings in a league game (17 2/3). The previous record was 17 innings, held by Alex Burnett, who is with the Minnesota Twins.

“Jonah has out-performed our expectations for him this year,” Patrick Johnson said. “He has earned his place in the rotation and has come in to get us out of some sticky situations. He’s a very durable performer and a great guy to be around, very upbeat attitude.”

Borowski said that Desjardin, who throws between 55 and 75 mph, and, “consistently in the mid-60s” range, throws a ball like a knuckle ball, which “baffles” hitters.

Ocean View is home Friday for a 3 p.m. game against Loara. The Seahawks play a 3 p.m. game Wednesday at Santa Ana.

Brethren Christian

In an Academy League game April 17, the Warriors were in a tight game with Oxford Academy but the Patriots pulled away by scoring 11 runs over the final two innings to come away with a 13-0 win. Billy Bryson threw 4 2/3 innings for the Warriors, his longest stretch of the season.

BC takes on Crean Lutheran at 7 p.m. Friday at Ryan Lemmon Park in Irvine.
