Softball Roundup: Marina proves too much for Edison

A switch in game venues couldn’t stop a determined Marina High softball team from earning a big road victory.

The Vikings improved to 3-0 in Sunset League action and are in first place following a 10-0 mercy-rule win at Edison. The teams were scheduled to play at Marina, but a water-pipe problem at the Vikings’ home field forced the game to be moved to Edison.

The Vikings had their offense in high gear. A 12-hit attack was led by Sydnee Cable, Desiree Hagberg and Samantha Agamaite each of whom hit a two-run home run, and Emili Olague, who went four for four with three runs batted in.

Junior pitcher Tera Blanco also was on her game and threw a one-hitter with eight strikeouts.

“My team was so focused and pumped,” Marina Coach Shelly Luth said after her team improved to 18-2 overall.

The loss put Edison at 2-1 in league and 12-6 overall. The Chargers were coming off a second-place finish in the championship bracket of the Woodbridge Tournament, where they went 4-1. Lizabelle Talataina, Karley Wester and Kiana Pancino made the all-tournament team.

Edison plays host to Fountain Valley at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley also were victorious in Sunset League play Tuesday.

Huntington routed visiting Newport Harbor, 12-0. Micaela Vierra struck out 11 and gave up four hits in running her record to 9-4.

Freshmen Alyssa Horeczko had three hits and Anna Kufta went four for four with five RBIs to power an 18-hit attack. Raegan Zschach had a key bunt single that turned the momentum Huntington’s way during a five-run fourth inning.

The Oilers are a game back of Edison at 2-1 in league, and are 12-7 overall.

“This year’s team can score runs in bunches,” Huntington Coach Jeff Forsberg said. “We have never had this type of offensive support in my tenure. It starts with [Sammie Vandiver and [Kristina] Inouye, and then the athleticism goes up and down the lineup.

“[Micaela] Vierra has been stellar throwing and gives us a chance each game. We are getting great play from our starters and the bench.”

Jacqui Pascual had two hits for Huntington in its 5-0 loss on April 11 to Marina. The Oilers had won their Sunset opener on April 9 by rolling past Fountain Valley, 17-2. Vierra went the distance and struck out seven. Offensively for the Oilers, who had 23 hits, Vandiver went three for three, Inouye went four for four with three RBIs, Pascual had three hits, Emily Stoner belted a home run, Tamra Hartmann had two hits and Jamie Zschach came off the bench to produce three hits.

Huntington visits Los Alamitos at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Fountain Valley earned its first Sunset victory by defeating host Los Alamitos, 4-2. Kelli Tatum had a double and two RBIs and Randi Fehser drove in two runs for the Barons, who went to 1-2 in league.

Ocean View is 1-1 in Golden West League play after splitting two games in the past week.

The Seahawks launched their league season on April 9 and overwhelmed Santa Ana. Brittany Hitchcock pitched four innings and allowed one hit with 11 strikeouts for her 12th win (12-2) of the season. A 12-hit effort was led by Tobi Salzman and Anika Ortiz with three hits apiece and Cassie Baughman with two hits.

In an early league showdown on April 11, Ocean View (13-3 overall) mustered only two hits in a 5-0 loss to visiting Segerstrom.

Segerstrom is ranked No. 3, and Ocean View No. 3, in Division 4

Ocean View played host to Westminster Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time. The Seahawks travel to Orange Friday for a 3:15 p.m. league game.
