Twins sit atop standings after first round

The Fountain Valley Twins completed the first round of Majors Division play in first place with a 7-3 record, thanks to a 6-3 victory Saturday over the Westminster Padres.

Shane McCarthy had a two-run double to open the scoring in the second inning but the Twins trailed, 3-2, entering the bottom of the fifth. There, Garrett Gilmore hit his second double of the game and Mark Volkert’s bunt single put runners at the corners before McCarthy’s single scored Gilmore. Volkert scored on Brian Allen’s single, Jon Kerchenfaut singled home McCarthy and Simon Costa drove in Allen, to put the Twins in front, 6-3.

Riley Hanson struck out the three Padres he faced in the sixth to complete the comeback win and record his first complete game of the season. He gave up two earned runs on five hits and two walks to go along with nine strikeouts, fanning six batters of the final three innings.

Jacob Vu and Matt Perales each had an RBI for the Padres.

Twins 9, Westminster Angels 3: Riley Hanson went three for four with a two-RBI triple, Steven Gonzalez went two for four with an RB, Tanner Motske had two RBI, Nick Taylor had a double and scored two runs and Brian Allen had a hit, drew two walks and stole two bases, to lead the Twins past the Angels in a game that went seven inning.

It was the first win by the Twins over the Angels in three meetings this year.

Nick Otero went three for four and Ronnie Natera, Ayers Sellers and Stone Wallace had two hits each.

Braves 9 Nationals 6: The Braves came from behind to defeat the Nationals in a Majors Division game. Dylan Palmer and Nick Pratto hit home runs for the Nationals. The Braves’ Braydon Salzman scored on a wild pitch for the game’s first run.

Thunder 10, Hooks 5: Joseph Moore went three for three with a two-run double in the third inning for the Thunder and Micah Blake had a two-run double in the fourth for the Hooks.

Mets 16, Diamond Jaxx 5: Danny Gallardo, Grady Carter and Sean Headley had key RBIs and Gallardo struck out two in the fifth in his pitching debut, to help get the Mets past the Diamond Jaxx.

Raptors vs. Iron Birds: Strong defensive plays by both teams dominated Saturday’s game. The Raptors defense was led by pitcher Riley Bradley who struck out five over two innings, Samuel Cohen who caught two pop flies and Jack Rockefeller at first base. Offensively, Rockefeller doubled to center field.

Iron Birds vs. Lugnuts: Both teams were quite offensively until the bottom of the fourth where Jack Jernigan, A.J. Hurtado, Gavin Kells and Joshua Ocampo each had a hit for the Iron Birds. The Lugnuts rallied in the top of the sixth with a solid base hit by Jackson Harris. Iron Birds’ pitcher William Lawler then retired the next two batters and Cade Hart closed out the game for the Lugnuts.

Bruins vs. Dirtbags: Connor Stephens, Rizzi Collado, Ryan Flory and Bradley Kirkman had key defensive stops and Kirkman also keyed the offense for the Bruins against the Dirtbags.

Bruins vs. Hurricanes: The hot-hitting Bruins were led offensively by Rizzi Collado, Connor Stephens, Cameron Youngsma and Bradley Kirkman. Defensively, the Bruins were led by Matthew Arguello, Jason Flory and Avery Wiley.

Sun Devils vs. Dirtbags: Matthey Hohl, Cole Steiner and Aidan Ferguson all had key hits for the Dirtbags. For the Sun Devils, Jack Feria led the way with his hitting, base running and fielding, Sean Carlin had a bases-loaded double and Matt Severin had the play of the game, tagging out a Dirtbags runner in a rundown between second and third base.
