Walk-off shot lifts F.V.

Tuesday’s Sunset League softball showdown between Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley was a pitchers’ duel much of the way, but in the final two innings, it ended up being decided by the long ball.

Huntington had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by Justice Walker and took that advantage into the bottom of the seventh. With two on in Fountain Valley’s last at-bat, Brenda Bott delivered a three-run, walk-off home run to lift the host Barons to a 3-1 victory.

Huntington freshman Micaela Vierra and Fountain Valley’s Cerissa Rivera dominated much of the game, Vierra by giving up four hits while Rivera surrendered three hits, two walks and struck out 18.

“It was a must-win game and the girls never gave up, and it paid off,” Fountain Valley Coach Rick Aldrich said.”

“The Fountain Valley pitcher (Rivera) was stellar and made us defenseless in putting the ball in play,” Huntington Coach Jeff Forsberg said. “But our pitcher (Vierra) also threw very well and really grew-up in her game presence.”

“(It was) a great game as the only difference was their home run came with runners on base, while ours had none. A typical Sunset game. We are learning to play all seven innings against very good teams.”

In other softball action:

Edison: The Chargers (14-1, 2-0 league) pounded out 17 hits and junior Sammy Cordova threw a no-hitter with nine strikeouts Tuesday in a 13-0 Sunset League rout of host Newport Harbor. Katie Shinrock went four for five with four runs, Casey Africano three for five and Madison Hickman- three for five with five RBIs.

On Saturday, Edison defeated La Habra, 5-4, in the semifinals, then ML King, 8-2, in the championship game to win the Woodbridge Tournament. Rachel Vitali and Megan Feurestein made the all-tournament team for the Chargers.

Marina: In a key Sunset League game, the Vikings took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning against visiting Los Alamitos but it was there that the Dana Rex smashed a grand slam home run to lift the Griffins to a 4-1 victory. Marina freshman pitcher Tera Blanco, who suffered her first loss in falling to 9-1, and Nicolette Lujan both doubled for the Vikings.

Ocean View: The Seahawks last played April 6 and scored a 12-0 shutout of Westminster in their Golden West League opener. Celine Fuentes tossed a four-hit shutout and doubled on offense. Jacelyn Nelson had two hits and Sarah Craig and Brittany Hitchcock also doubled.

In softball action today, Edison hosts Los Alamitos and Fountain Valley is at Newport Harbor in Sunset League play. On Friday, Ocean View is on the road for a Golden West League game against Loara

Brethren Christian: The Warriors dropped a 3-1 Academy League game Tuesday to visiting Crean Lutheran.

Edison: The Chargers scored all six of their runs in the top of the seventh in an eruption that carried them to a 6-0 Sunset League win at Fountain Valley. Eric Snyder hit a two-run home run and Sean Whiteman belted a three-run triple in the decisive frame. Henry Owens gave up just three hits in improving to 6-0.

Edison rallied late on April 6 to score an 11-9 win over Fountain Valley. Christian Lopes had a pair of two-run home runs to go along with a double to account for eight RBIs and Snyder also doubled.

Fountain Valley: Prior to falling, 6-0 Friday at home to Edison, the Barons held a 9-6 lead on the Chargers in an April 6 game but the host Chargers scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out an 11-9 win. Turner Clouse had a three-run home run, Nate Rodriguez doubled twice and Charlie Stephens and Taylor Martin also doubled.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers had a “rough week,” Coach Benji Medure said, dropping a pair of one-run games to Los Alamitos ( 5-4 and 3-2). Huntington out-hit the Griffins (7-3) in Friday’s 7-3 loss with Lou Payetta getting a triple and both Sean Anderson and Brett Uribe doubling.

“The season is far from over,” Medure said. “We just have to get up off the floor, dust ourselves off and keep battling. We’re better than 6-8. We’re going to go on a run soon.”

Marina: The Vikings recorded a pair of one-sided Sunset League wins last week against Newport Harbor, beating the Sailors by scores of 6-0 and 17-1. Jake Tillinghast got the win. in the 6-0 win on April 6. In the 17-1 win April 7, Trevor Megill got the win and hit two home runs and finished with five RBIs. In Marina’s 15-hit attack, Nick Marshall, Jeff Guzman and Chris Schaaf each had a double, Guzman had three RBIs, Guzman and Chris Martinez each had two RBIs and Marshall, Jake Arledge, Tyler Mildenberg and Peyton Lobdell all drove in a run.

Ocean View: The Seahawks posted a 10-3 victory April 6 over Diamond Ranch. Blake Hitchcock hit a three-run home run to give Ocean View a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Blake Walker doubled twice and also got the pitching win.

In baseball action Friday , Edison hosts Huntington Beach and Marina is at home against Fountain Valley in Sunset League play and Ocean View travels to face Orange in a Golden West League game
