High School Roundup: Oilers repeat as champs in Hawaii

A trip to Hawaii resulted in another tournament championship for the Huntington Beach High boys’ volleyball team.

A year ago, the Oilers captured the title of the Kamehameha Cup. During spring break last week, the Oilers returned to the tournament, and again claimed the crown. Huntington went 6-0 at the event and capped its run on Saturday with a 25-19, 25-14, victory over Kamehameha Kapalama.

The Oilers, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, won by sweep in three of their six matches. They started the tournament with wins against Hawaiian schools Kamehameha Big Island (25-18, 25-23) and Kaiser (25-23, 25-15). The next three matches went three sets with the Oilers defeating Highland (Arizona), 25-19, 21-25, 25-15, Bellflower St. John Bosco, 25-22, 16-25, 25-22, and Kamehameha Kapalama, 25-19, 20-25, 25-14.

St. John Bosco is ranked seventh in Division 1.

“Andrew TenBrink had a great match, as he was unstoppable in the middle,” Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said of the senior middle blocker/outside hitter’s performance in Saturday’s title game. “We played very smooth for the entire match. The passing allowed Matt [Butler] to run the offense to perfection.

“This was the first time all year that we have had our entire roster healthy and available for action. It was good to see us playing with passion and intensity all week.”

Local teams resumed league play this week. In Sunset League matches Friday, Huntington travels to Edison (5:30 p.m.), and Marina plays host to Fountain Valley (5:30 p.m.). In Golden West League action, Ocean View is on the road at Orange (4:30 p.m.).

Softball

Both Marina and Edison competed earlier in the week at the Woodbridge Classic, which concludes Saturday.

Marina, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, was impressive in its opener Saturday, a 9-1 win over Hart. Pitcher Tera Blanco threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Blanco, who improved to 13-1, also went two for two, walked, and had three runs batted in on offense. Keala Cordeiro went two for three with three RBIs, Emily Olague went two for three, Sydney McCollum hit a home run and Sydnee Cable had a hit and RBI.

On Monday, Marina had its nine-game win streak snapped by El Modena which shut out the Vikings, 4-0. It was the first loss for the Vikings (13-2) since March 12.

Edison is off to a 3-0 start at the Woodbridge Classic. The Chargers (9-4) coasted past Temescal Canyon, 14-1, and followed with a 3-0 blanking of La Habra, on Saturday. Their third win came at the expense of Peninsula, 7-2, on Monday.

In the 13-run win over Temescal Canyon, Edison scored seven runs before the first out of the game was recorded. Reis Birkett went two for three with a double and three RBIs. Liz Talataina also went two for three with four RBIs which included a two-run home run in the second inning. Freshman Allie Greenburg went three for three and drove in two runs.

Kiana Pancino pitched three scoreless innings and gave up one hit in earning the win. Isabella Stoner threw the final two innings and gave up two hits and a run, and got the save.

With Karley Wester at bat in the fifth inning of the La Habra game, the Chargers would score the only runs they’d need against the Highlanders. With two runners on base, Carissa Sherman stole third and scored on the play after an errant throw. On a 1-0 count, Wester blasted a two-run home run over the fence in right field, for a 3-0 lead.

Wester also doubled in a two-for-three game. Pancino pitched a complete-game shutout and allowed only two hits.

In the 7-2 Gold Bracket quarterfinal win against Peninsula, Talataina put the Chargers on the scoreboard with a two-run single in the first inning, and later scored on a single by Greenburg. With bases loaded in the fourth, Ali Wester delivered a three-run double to the gap in right-center field. Stoner had a pinch-hit single in the fifth to bring in the Chargers’ final run.

Ali Wester went three for three, drew a walk and stole two bases. Pancino (3-0) gave up two runs and four hits in four innings pitched and Stoner came in to finish the game.

“Kiana Pancino has been key to our success on the field,” Edison Coach Kim Ensey said. “She has stepped into a really tough role as a starting pitcher as a freshman, and has really produced. Our ace, Sammy Cordova, has been a huge influence in preparing Kiana for these games.

“We needed to find a way to put a complete game together. We are finding that when we put good defense with good pitching and a productive offense, good things happen.”

Huntington Beach competed at the Arroyo Grande Tournament during spring break when the Oilers went 2-2.

Micaela Vierra pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Maria Steadman drove in the winning run, as Huntington won its opener, 1-0, over a Nipomo team that entered the game 10-0. In the Oilers’ second game, Sammie Vandiver had two hits in an 8-5 loss to La Mirada. Jill Martinez and freshman Alyssa Horescko both had two hits for the Oilers in their third game, a 4-3 loss to Clovis Buchanan.

Huntington (10-7) completed the tournament on April 4 with a 3-1 win over Templeton. Horescko struck out a career-high 13 batters for the win, and had two hits on offense. Tamra Hartmann also had two hits and Sabrina Williams had a key, two-run triple that put the Oilers in the lead.

For the tournament, Horescko paced the Huntington offense with five hits. Steadman, Martinez, Vandiver and Kristina Inouye had three hits apiece. Vierra struck out 18, overall.

“We have done this trip every other year for the last six years and it’s a great way for the team to bond and play against other out-of-area teams before we start league,” Huntington Coach Jeff Forsberg said. “I thought we played well enough to win all four games. The trip is a great way to get us ready for league.”

Marina, Edison and Huntington started Sunset League play Tuesday. Scores from those games weren’t available at press time. In Sunset games Thursday, Edison is home to Los Alamitos (3:15 p.m.), Fountain Valley is at Newport Harbor (3:15 p.m.), and Huntington plays host to Marina (6 p.m.).

Ocean View, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 4, also started its Golden West League schedule on Tuesday. The Seahawks will play host to Segerstrom at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.

Track and Field

The second Ocean View Track and Field Small Schools Invitational is Saturday at Ocean View High. Field events begin at 8:45 a.m. and running events start at 9 a.m.

Ocean View Coach Grant Mosher said the invitational is open to schools with enrollment of 2,000 students and under. This year’s event features 22 girls’ and 23 boys’ teams competing in both varsity and frosh/soph events.

“My goal is to provide a meet which will be both friendly and competitive, and which will provide a good tuneup leading into the end of the season and league finals,” Mosher said.

Football

Six local players are among 36 players selected to the South roster for the Brea Lions Club Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game. The senior players, Alek Torgersen, Miah Frost, Derek Baljeu and Trenton Aschoff of Edison, and Sebastian DeMartini and Milo Aviles of Huntington Beach, will compete in the 54th annual contest at 7:15 p.m. on June 28 at Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

The South will be coached by Scott Meyer of Corona del Mar. The North is coached by Fred DiPalma of Katella.

The game’s players and coaches were selected by the Orange County Sportswriters Assn.
