Three local teams hold CIF rankings

For the second straight week, the Edison baseball team and Edison and Marina softball teams held down their respective CIF Southern Section rankings.

Edison again heads the Division 1 baseball poll. The Chargers are followed by Valencia/Valencia, Moorpark, Lakewood, Vista Murrieta, Hart, Mater Dei, JSerra, Orange Lutheran and Oxnard.

In softball, Edison is ninth and Marina tied for 10th with Pacifica (Garden Grove) in Division 1. Etiwanda continues to lead the poll and is followed in spots second through eighth by Esperanza, Valencia/Valencia, Temecula Valley, Los Alamitos, Simi Valley, Santa Margarita.

Ultimate Boarder competition continues today

The second stage of the fourth annual Ultimate Boarder Championship — the surfing competition — is today at Seaside Reef at Cardiff-by-the-Sea. Among the pro and amateur athletes competing are Tosh Townend and Christian Hosoi of Huntington Beach.

Townend finished in 18th place Saturday at the solo snowboarding event at Mammoth Mountain. The triathlon-like competition, a week-long series that pits some of the top surfers, skaters and snowboarders in three events, concludes with the skateboarding and awards ceremony Saturday at the Seaside Reef parking lot. The first-place prize is $30,000. Mike Morrissey, of Laguna Beach, is the defending champion.

AYSO Flex Extra teams forming

AYSO’s FLEX EXTRA is a program designed for soccer players with a higher level of interest, skill and ability. Region 117 (Huntington Beach/Fountain Valley) is forming U10 to U14 boys’ and girls’ teams. Week-long tryouts start Monday at Talbert Middle School, 9101 Brabham Drive, Huntington Beach.

Baseball clinic dates set

The Lifeletics Spring Break Clinic, a three-day instructional baseball clinic that combines defensive, offensive and speed/strength/agility training, is April 19-21 at Wardlow Park (home of Huntington Valley Little League) in Huntington Beach.
