Salzman leads Braves to win

The Braves picked up a shutout victory Saturday by defeating the Rockies, 3-0, in Ocean View Little League Majors Division play.

Braydon Salzman threw a complete game and also scored a run. The Braves scored in the opening inning when Michael Baker singled home James Williams and the second run came when Sadie Atwood drew a walk to force home Jason Mayorga. In the fifth, Salzman scored on a fielder’s choice, thanks to smart base running by Mayorga.

The Braves prevented the Rockies from scoring in the sixth on a double play between Mayorga at first base and Williams at the plate.

Minor B Division

Mets 7, Lookouts 6: Nathan Skorheim scored on an overthrow in the sixth inning to give the Mets the one-run win.

A double by Edison Chiu and key hits by Tristan Kennedy and Lucas Pantel in the third inning turned things around for the Mets, who had trailed to that point. Pantel started on the mound for the Mets and threw two innings.

Rockhounds 12, Mets 5: The Rockhounds took control of the game in the third inning to defeat the Mets.

Starting pitcher Tristan Kennedy struck out four and didn’t allow a walk in 2 1/2 innings for the Mets who scored two runs to take an early lead.

Minor C Division

Raptors vs. Iron Birds (no score kept): The Raptors hosted the Iron Birds Saturday in the first kid-pitch game of the season.

Pitchers for the Raptors included: Quinn Ortiz, Samuel Cohn, Riley Bradley and Owen Sideris. Making their pitching debuts for the Iron Birds were Ramon Lopez, William Lawler,Gavin Kells, Miles Lopez and A.J. Hurtado.

Both teams were quiet offensively until the fourth inning where the Raptors preyed the Iron Birds for three runs. The Iron Birds rallied in the fifth with base hits by Kells and Isaac Ballinas who was also named offensive player of the game for the Birds.

Farm Division

Sun Devils vs. Waves (no score kept): Saturday’s much anticipated clash between the Sun Devils and Waves did not disappoint.

For the Waves, there were stars everywhere but Luke Kumaric and Bradley Navarro both had strong games with good hitting performances. Navarro made a sharp play at first base. For the Sun Devils, Kyle Palmer had several key hits, Kyle Donoho made an incredible grab of a line drive and Matthew and Nicholas Severin, along with Nicholas Flum, also played well.

Fountain Valley Little League

Twins 20, Red Sox 1: In a rematch of an eight-inning, March 15 Majors Division game, the Twins pulled away from a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning to win going away. In the previous meeting between the teams, the Twins scored a 3-2 win.

In the Twins’ fourth, Nick Taylor had a lead-off single, Nathan Young reached base on an error, Riley Hanson singled in Taylor and Steven Gonzalez drove in Young and Hanson. Garret Gilmore reached first on a catcher’s interference call and Tanner Motske then drove in Hanson and Gilmore.

The Mets’ scoring continued as Gonzalez and Motske each drove in two more runs and Shane McCarthy finished the scoring with a three-run home run over the fence in center-field.

Taylor, Gonzalez and Motske each had two hits and Gonzalez, Motske and McCarthy each drove in four runs.

Hanson threw three innings and recorded eight strikeouts to go along with one run, two hits and a walk for his third win of the season. McCarthy made his pitching debut with a shutout inning in the fourth.

Parker Smith’s hit drove home Timmy Knowles in the second inning for the Red Sox.

Westminster Angels 4, Fountain Valley Mets 0: Nick Taylor, Riley Hanson and Nathan Young combined to strikeout 10 and walk three, but the Mets fell in a Majors Division game. The Angels picked up their four runs in the third inning on three hits, two walks and two errors. Taylor, Young, Tanner Motske and Brian Allen had one hit each.
