Orioles finding their groove in Ocean View Little League

Ocean View Little League

The Orioles staged a fifth-inning rally in Majors Division play that led them to a 10-8 victory over the Rangers.

The Orioles started the scoring when Landen Hill singled and later scored, and teammates Brad Monroe, Kelan Long and Jake Volo also scored. Monroe struck out five over the first two innings to keep the Rangers scoreless. The Rangers powered back in the third inning with four singles that led to a 5-4 lead. The Orioles took the lead back when Monroe scored and a run-scoring single by Grant Brehm drove in Long.

The Rangers again took the lead in the top of the fifth by scoring three runs. In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Welander and Nick Daniels both singled before Seth Knorr singled home Welander. Daniels and Knorr both scored on passed balls and Monroe finished the Orioles’ comeback with a run-scoring triple that scored Jacob Bonillas.

Orioles 5, Cardinals 4: The Orioles fell behind the Cardinals but battled back to pick up another victory.

The Cardinals took a 2-0 first-inning lead when Zeke Ziegler scored on a passed ball and Cory Nicholson picked up a run batted in. In the third inning, Danny Duarte and Jake Volvo both doubled, with Volvo’s hit scoring Duarte for the Orioles’ first run. In the bottom of the third, Jason Roe doubled, Chase Stewart singled and Roe scored.

In the top of the fourth, Grant Brehm and Ryan Welander singled and both scored on a triple by Elijah Blake.

The Cardinals struck for one more run in the sixth when Roe doubled for the second time in the game and scored on a double by Ziegler.

Juniors Division

Seaview 15, Ocean View Cardinals 13: Seaview took command of the game by scoring 12 runs in the fifth inning and then held off a comeback attempt by the Cardinals. Highlights for the Cardinals included a leaping catch by second baseman Nathan Crocker that resulted in a double play in the fourth inning.

Minor A Division

Mud Hens 7, Knights 2: The Mud Hens came out swinging Saturday and defeated the Knights.

Both Thomas Williams and Zack Pratte hit triples early in the game that led to the Mud Hens taking a 5-0 lead by the top of the third inning. The Knights scored the next two runs, but defensive plays by Zander Fletcher and Bruno Stenzel prevented any further scoring. Paul Crocker stole home in the fourth inning to push the Mud Hens’ lead to 6-2. Solid pitching from Jag Burden, Chance DiMarco and Williams, stopped the Knights.

Rivercats 6, Knights 0: Luke Adelman came up big at the plate and on the mound Monday, leading the Rivercats to a shutout of the Knights. Adelman hit a triple in the fifth inning that drove in two runs. On the mound, Adelman gave up just three hits, walked two, struck out five and didn’t allow an earned run in three innings of work.

The Rivercats, who had 10 hits and four extra-base hits, received an RBI double by Samuel Myers in the fifth.

Minor C Division

Bees vs. Iron Birds: For the Iron Birds, there were several great plays, including shortstop Roman Cianca robbing the Bees’ Sean Carlin of extra bases when he caught a hard shot in the fourth inning. Cianca also starred at the plate with several line drives that turned into doubles. Jacob George also turned in a solid game for the Iron Birds.

For the Bees, Kyle Palmer and Jaylene Duarte both came close to home runs and Jack Feria also chipped in with some solid hitting. Kaden Chase fielded his position well and produced several key hits for the surging Bees.

Bees vs. Timber Rattlers: Both teams made great plays that pleased a large crowd in attendance.

For the Timber Rattlers, there were many excellent defensive plays, including a catch of a line drive by pitcher Macie Manzo. Both Manzo and Mike Jacobson had an outstanding game at the plate.

For the Bees, Nick Severin continued his hot streak with a bases-loaded double and two other hits, and Kyle Donoho, Jaylene Duarte and Nick Flum each had hits. Donoho and Kaden Chase made several key plays in the field and Severin was awarded the game ball for the Bees for his overall strong play.

Girls’ Soccer

The Huntington Beach Dream Under-13 girls’ EXTRA team, from AYSO Region 143, won its division title at the California State Championships on March 17 at Cathedral City.

The HB Dream played through rain and high winds to win both their matches by 1-0 scores. In its first game, the HB Dream defeated a team from Ventura on a goal from a free kick just outside the 18-yard line by Emily Larsen.

In the second game, a clean shot by Kassidy Burns was the only goal in a victory over a team from West Garden Grove. Goalkeeper Angelica Madrid was flawless in the two shutouts.

The championship capped a successful season that began with the team winning its division championship at the preseason McMillan Tournament in Costa Mesa.

The HB Dream U13 team is: coached by Scott Larsen and Thomas Almeida. Team players are: Kelsea Almeida, Emily Aranda, Kassidy Burns, Abby Cahill, Katelyn Castillo, Bridgette Guerra, Emily Larsen, Angelica Madrid, Rachel Rivas, Kayla Robbins, Ofelia Sosa, Avril Stulginski, Christina Tiehen and Eden VanWaardenburg.
