Mini run has Edison back in thick of things

Edison continued on its recent roll and Huntington Beach scored a second one-run victory over Fountain Valley, as the Sunset League baseball race continued Tuesday.

Edison was outhit, 10-6, by Newport Harbor, but still came away with a 4-3 win over the visiting Sailors. The Chargers (4-2 in league) have won three straight league games, beating the Sailors for a second time this year. Relief pitcher Timmy Lopes (2-0) got the win.

Huntington Beach, ranked eighth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, came away with a 4-3 home win over Fountain Valley. Jake Caron went two for three with a double, Mario Gross hit a two-run double in the second inning and Christian Abe got the win to run his record to 5-1.

Mike Hickman went three for four to lead Fountain Valley.

On March 16, the Oilers (11-2, 4-2 league) rallied in the seventh inning at Fountain Valley to pull out a 5-4 win in the first meeting between the teams.

“We got lucky today (Tuesday),” Huntington Coach Benji Medure said. “We played as flat as we have played in two months. They (Fountain Valley) were ready to play and they hammered the ball. I have no idea how we won that game.

“We need to step up and compete with our hair on fire every game in order to win this league.”

Fountain Valley, 2-4 in league and 8-5 overall, has dropped three one-run games in league play. In a previous league game, Hickman went two for three, Dillon Persinger had two hits and sophomore Joe Loranger gave up just one hit in four innings to lead the Barons to a 4-0 win over Newport Harbor.

In Sunset League games Thursday, Edison travels to Newport Harbor and Huntington Beach is at Fountain Valley. Both games start at 3:15 p.m.

Marina (9-4) didn’t have any Sunset League games scheduled this week but is playing in the OC Nissan Tournament. The Vikings started the tournament Saturday and defeated visiting Trabuco Hills, 8-3. Jake Arledge went three for four with two runs scored, Tyler Mildenberg went two for three and Max Gibbs threw five innings and got the win.

On Monday, Marina fell, 2-1, to Long Beach Wilson. Junior Jackson Westermeyer threw a complete game for the Vikings, a performance Marina Coach Bob Marshall called, “very effective,” but the Vikings couldn’t produce on offense. They committed a pair of costly base running mistakes and made two errors that led to both Bruins runs.

The Vikings bounced back Tuesday to score four runs in the top of the seventh to pull out a 10-9 tourney win over Riverside Poly. Arledge and Bauers each doubled, Landon Marshall doubled with a run batted in and Keegan Reeser had an RBI.

Marina last week took back the lead in the Sunset League race by knocking off host Huntington, 5-3, on Friday. Reeser, Bauers and Marshall hit home runs and Austin Olivas got the pitching win.

“It’s huge,” Marshall said of the win. “This is our archrival. Huntington is a great team, highly ranked and is solid, from top to bottom. That’s the best Huntington Beach team that I’ve seen in a long time. It was a great atmosphere out here today and both teams gave it their all.

“Like I said last week after we beat Fountain Valley, this league is a dog fight. “It’s great to get this one, but there are plenty more games to play.”

In a key Golden West League game Tuesday, Ocean View fell, 6-5, to Westminster.

The Seahawks gave up six first-inning runs to visiting Westminster and nearly stormed all the way back, but ended up losing to the Lions. The setback put Ocean View at 3-3 in league while the Lions improved to 5-1.

Ocean View committed three errors in the first inning that aided Westminster’s early jump. But the Seahawks battled back to chip away at the huge deficit. Down three runs and facing two outs the bottom of the seventh, junior designated hitter Luke Fell (two for four) singled to right field to ignite a Seahawks rally. Senior Chad Hackworth, who entered to pinch hit for senior relief pitcher Jonah Desjardin, worked a 3-1 count before he took an inside fastball for a two-run home run.

Westminster starter Gabe Solis was then replaced by Tyler Mahle and the junior, a star player for the Lions, gave up a home run to left field on his first pitch to Timmy Robinson (three for four, double, home run). The back-to-back home runs drew the Seahawks to within 6-5. Senior Colton Johnson followed Robinson with a single up the middle to put the tying run on base, but Mahle got Seahawks’ junior Jared Goodman to hit a grounder back to the mound for the final out.

Desjardin, who replaced starter Travis Sparks-Jackson in the opening inning, threw 6 2/3 shutout innings and “pitched brilliantly,” Seahawks Coach Shane Borowski said.

Ocean View and Westminster meet again at 3:15 p.m. Thursday. The Lions have won both previous league meetings between the teams, including a 3-1 victory March 16.

Brethren Christian fell, 10-3, to visiting Sage Hill, the third-ranked team in Division 3, on Friday. BC was held hitless until the bottom of the seventh, where Cameron Smith came up with a single. Daniel Lee pitched a complete game for the Warriors, who face Whitney of Cerritos at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Several teams are competing in tournament action during spring break. Fountain Valley begins play Saturday at the Beach Pit Classic, Ocean View starts the National Classic Tournament on Monday and Edison and Huntington Beach open at the San Luis Obispo Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Marina, meanwhile, has a pair of Sunset League games next week against Los Alamitos. The Vikings play at Los Al on Tuesday and host the Griffins on Wednesday. Both games start at 1 p.m.
