Youth Scene: Hot Rods, Red Wings earn wins

The Hot Rods, Iron Pigs and Red Wings went into spring break on a winning note as each picked up victories Saturday in Ocean View Little League Minor A Division play.

Hot Rods 11, Bats 9: The Hot Rods outlasted the Bats in a game where the teams combined for 21 hits.

Antonio Ventimiglia went three for three with a double, Nick Madole doubled twice, Micah Kennedy singled and doubled and Gavin Kells singled for the Hot Rods. AJ Hurtado pitched two innings, giving up only one run. Kells, Ventimiglia, Quentin Custodio and Madole all saw relief action.

Dylan Uerling hit a two-run double for the Bats in their sixth-inning rally that fell short.

Iron Pigs 13, Muck Dogs 4:

The Iron Pigs took their first lead in the third inning and went on to defeat the Muck Dogs in their final preseason game.

Parker Warpole hit an RBI double to score Kai Marden early and the Muck Dogs built a 2-0 lead through two innings. The Iron Pigs rallied in the bottom of the third inning behind an RBI single by JC Cargassachi and double by Isaac Ballinas that put them in the lead.

Lucas Pantel and Mikey Caira had big hits in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead.

Mikey Pantel, Nate Skorheim, Ballinas, Joe Moore and Caira all took turns pitching for the Iron Pigs.

Red Wings 6, Knights 5:

Nick Dagarin and Jake Alvarez each had a two-run double in a five-run fourth inning as the Red Wings (3-5 preseason) earned a split on the week with the victory Friday over the Knights (3-2-1).

Dagarin and Daniel Kotkosky combined on a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts for the Red Wings. The Knights had the potential tying run at second with one out in the sixth, but Kotkosky struck out the final two batters to preserve the victory.

Jeremy Roe went three for three and scored twice for the Red Wings. Cole Kaplan and Brandon Lieberman each had a two-run triple for the Knights.

Bats 8, Red Wings 7:

Sammy Mejia’s walk-off two-run double capped a four-run Bats rally in the bottom of the sixth inning as they escaped with a victory over the Red Wings.

The Red Wings had taken a 7-3 lead with a six-run fifth inning, with Alec Muirhead’s two-run single and a towering three-run homer from Nick Dagarin the key blows. But the Bats pushed one across in the bottom of the fifth, then had four straight hits in the sixth after a leadoff walk for the winning rally.

For the Bats (3-4 preseason), David Drigla, Nick Shenkman and Jake D’Amico each went two for three with an RBI to lead a 10-hit attack. Shenkman, who started on the mound, allowed just two hits over the first three innings.

Dagarin and Muirhead each drove in three runs for the Red Wings. Leadoff hitter Daniel Kotkosky was two for three and scored twice.

Minor B Division

Mets 16, Lookouts 9:

Matt Fox hit two home runs and Luke Kumaric hit his first home run of the season in leading the Mets past the Lookouts.

Following Kumaric’s homer, Andrew Bentley had an RBI double, Colin Gray and Dominic Riola singled and Jack Pirooz hit a two-RBI double for the Mets.

Blue Wahoos 9, Mets 5:

The Blue Wahoos wiped out an early two-run deficit and went on to post a win over the Mets.

Luke Kumaric tripled in the top of the first inning when the Mets took a 2-0 lead. The Blue Wahoos responded by scoring three runs in the bottom-half of the inning to go in front for good. The Mets drew to within 9-3 in the fifth when Colin Gray singled and scored on an RBI by Dominic Riola.

In the sixth, Kumaric singled and scored on a triple by Matt Fox who went on to steal home to make it 9-5. Andrew Bentley followed with a line drive single to center. The Blue Wahoos, however, were able to end the rally, and game, by turning a double play on an infielder grounder.
