Giants win pitching duel, 2-1

In a game featuring two outstanding pitching performances, the Fountain Valley Giants edged the Westminster Angels, 2-1, in Little League Majors Division action.

The Angels jumped out to an early lead, pushing across an unearned run in the top of the second inning. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Drake Sueda singled to give the Giants their first hit of the game off Angels pitcher Jason Carroll. One out later, Sueda, who advanced to second on a wild pitch, scored the tying run on a single up the middle by Azael Peralta.

The score remained tied (1-1) heading into the sixth where the Angels put the go-ahead run on first with two out in the top-half of the inning but Giants catcher Derrick Weinheimer threw to shortstop Mark Madrid who tagged out the Westminster base runner on a steal attempt at second base.

Sergio Temores drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the sixth for the Giants and moved to second on an infield ground out by Pablo Crespo. With two outs, Sueda lifted a fly ball over the head of the Westminster centerfielder to score Temores with the winning run.

Peralta threw a complete-game for the Giants, allowing just three hits and an unearned run while striking out 10 and not giving up a walk.

The victory kept the Giants (4-2) tied for first place in the division with the Twins.

Ocean View Little League

Braves 16 Nationals 1: The Braves struck early and went on to defeat the Nationals in Majors Division action.

The Braves scored three runs in the first inning. Jason Mayorga and Nathan Crocker both had run-scoring singles that scored Braydon Salzman and James Williams, and Mayorga later scored on an error. The score stood at 3-0 until the fourth.

In the fourth inning, Andrew O’Brien brought in Trevor Windisch to score the Nationals’ only run. In the bottom of the frame, the Braves scored 12 runs to move out to a 15-1 lead. Michael Baker scored twice and Salzman, Williams, Mayorga, Crocker, Sadie Atwood, Jackson Roeder, Devin Lacy, Jacob Sievers and Jake Legg also scored. In the fifth, the Braves scored their final run when Williams was forced home on a bases-loaded walk.

Mayorga started on the mound for the Braves and Legg, Sievers, Crocker, Lacy and Daniel Myers, all saw relief action.

Braves 4 Rockies 0: Braydon Salzman’s double scored Jackson Roeder for the first run and Salzman threw all but one pitch in the shutout win for the Braves in a Majors Division game. Salzman was relieved late in the sixth inning by James Williams who needed just one pitch to get the third out, a catch in right field by Jacob Sievers, to end the game.

Also in the Braves’ third, Williams had a two-run single to make it 3-0. In the sixth, Jason Mayorga singled to score Salzman.

Minor A Division

Red Wings 3 Express 1: Justin Robinson hit a three-run home run in the first inning to stake the Red Wings to an early, 3-0 lead, en route to a two-run win over the Express. Robinson homered over the fence in centerfield. John Gottschalk got the Red Wings off to a strong start in the inning which included hits from Elijah Blake and Evan Gates.

Andrew DeCarlo and Blake pitched for the Red Wings who received a clutch play at second base with the bases loaded to end the game.

Minor B Division

Mets 20, Naturals 6: Lucas Pantel doubled twice in a five for five performance, Jimmy Campbell turned in a second-inning double play, and Tristan Kennedy made a key catch of a pop fly to lead the Mets.

Aeros 16, Mets 14: Edison Chiu drove in four runs, Jimmy Campbell and Tristan Kennedy each had three RBI with Kennedy driving in three runs on a bases-loaded triple for the Mets in their close loss to the Aeros.

Farm Division

Trojans vs. Sun Devils (no score kept): The rain never showed up, but the Trojans and Sun Devils both did as these two titans of the Farm league clashed on Saturday afternoon. For the Trojans, Jordan Cole made a big catch and both Kota Nakamura and Jake Hickman had big hits. The Sun Devils were led by the speed of Matt Severin with Jack Feria, Kyle Palmer and Nicholas Flum each contributing key hits.

Huskies vs. Sun Devils (no score kept): In a game where each team could claim a player named Kaden Chase, the Sun Devils and Huskies faced off in a noontime duel. Logan Dunn and Jake Weiler led the Huskies with several key hits. Kyle Donoho make an big catch and had several key plays in the field for the Sun Devils.
