High School Roundup: Oilers in good shape

So far, so good, for the Huntington Beach boys’ volleyball team.

The Oilers passed their first two tests of the Sunset League season in the past week capped by a 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 sweep on Tuesday of host Marina. The win moved the Oilers, ranked fourth in CIF Southern Section Division 1, to 12-2 overall.

It also kept them tied atop the league standings with Newport Harbor, a team the Oilers play host to Thursday.

Senior middle blocker Emmett Ross and junior libero Jake Weiser led Huntington with five kills each.

Junior outside hitter Logan Atkeson had 10 kills for Marina.

“I thought our team did a good job of siding out and competing with Huntington Beach throughout the majority of the match,” Marina Coach Rob Kijewski said.

Huntington began defense of its Sunset title Friday with a 25-13, 25-17, 26-24 win over visiting Fountain Valley. Junior middle blocker Ryan Morrissey had 10 kills.

“Winning the Sunset League is one of our goals every year, and in this league you have to be ready to play every night,” Huntington Beach Craig Pazanti said. “I was happy with the energy level from the start. Fountain Valley is a good team. So, it was good to get the win, but also good that a lot of guys got to contribute.”

The next test for the Oilers comes at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Newport Harbor. The Sailors are tied with Corona del Mar for the No. 10 ranking in Division 1.

Huntington closed out its regular season last spring with a victory at Newport Harbor that gave the Oilers an outright Sunset championship.

“This is a big game for both teams, but especially for us because we are at home,” Pazanti said. “You have to protect your home court in this league. I just hope we come out and play a good match.”

The loss to Huntington was the first in league play for Marina, which had opened its Sunset schedule on the road March 20 and defeated Los Alamitos, 17-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22. Logan Atkeson had 17 kills and Kellen O’Connell nine kills for the Vikings.

Over the weekend, Marina (10-12) competed at the La Jolla Beach City Invitational, where the Vikings went 1-4 in the tournament and finished 29th.

In another Sunset League match Tuesday, Edison earned its first win in league play with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-22 sweep at Los Alamitos. Jimmy Webb had a team-high 10 kills in the win.

The Chargers (6-12, 1-2) played Newport Harbor in back-to-back league matches last week and were edged, 3-2, in each game by the Sailors.

Edison plays host to Marina at 6 p.m. Friday.

Fountain Valley took on Newport Harbor in a Sunset match on Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Ocean View started its Golden West League season Wednesday at Santa Ana. The score wasn’t available at press time. The Seahawks closed out nonleague play with matches against San Gabriel and Woodbridge.

Ocean View fell, 25-17, 35-15, 25-12, to San Gabriel on March 19. Senior opposite Taivasa Alama and junior middle blocker Khemit Osborne had nine and six kills, respectively for the Seahawks. Osborne had five kills and seven blocks in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-16 loss March 21 to Woodbridge.

“With the season already halfway over, we are continuing to get better,” Ocean View Coach Seth Cutrell said. “We are looking forward to continue to improve throughout the season to make sure we are ready for CIF.”

Boys’ Lacrosse

Marina: Senior Ryan Salz scored five goals and senior goalie Geoffrey Halvorson recorded 13 saves and had an assist Tuesday in the Vikings’ 17-13 win over visiting Dana Hills at Westminster High.

Senior David Feirstein scored three goals and had three assists, seniors Matthew Burgos and Brady Erickson both scored three goals and senior Austin Jenkins scored twice for the Vikings, who travel Saturday for a 10 a.m. match against Los Alamitos at McAuliffe Middle School.

Boys’ Basketball

Three local players this week were named All-CIF Southern Section. Brethren Christian senior Mamadou Ndiaye was named Co-MVP with Tyler Coppin-Carter of Buckley in Division 5AA. Huntington Beach senior Harley Ruder was named to the Division 1A team, and Kendall Small, a sophomore at Ocean View, was named to the Division 3AA team.

Football

The nominations for the South team for the Brea Lions Orange County North-South All-Star Football Game have been released. The game, for graduating seniors, is June 28 at Orange Coast College.

Several local players were nominated for consideration to the South roster. Final rosters will be released in April.
