Oilers keep on rolling

First, they won the Best of the West Tournament boys’ volleyball championship in Poway. On Monday, the Huntington Beach High Oilers added another tournament title to their 2014 resumé.

Top-ranked Huntington laid claim to the Orange County Championships tournament title by sweeping Corona del Mar, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24, in the Division 1 final at Edison High. The title match pitted the top two-ranked teams in CIF Southern Section Division 1.

Junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco and senior outside hitter Brenden Sander had 13 kills each, senior middle blocker Ryan Morrissey had seven kills, and junior setter Davis Gillett had 36 assists in the title-clinching victory.

Huntington won the tournament for the first time since 2010.

“It’s always good to win a tournament, but to do so with a new lineup, and making changes on the fly, was real testament to this group,” Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said. “They battled the whole weekend, and really played well Monday night.”

Monday’s win capped a tourney run that saw the Oilers defeat San Juan Hills (3-1), Dana Hills (3-1), and eighth-ranked San Clemente (3-1), in previous tournament action.

The four victories took the Oilers to 15-0 on the season.

DeFalco was named MVP of the tournament, and Sander and senior middle blocker Drake Evans were named to the all-tournament team.

Prior to the tournament, Huntington scored a 25-16, 25-20, 25-13 sweep of visiting Trabuco Hills. DeFalco had 12 kills and Sander and junior opposite Ben Vaught had eight and five kills, respectively.

The Oilers now turn their attention to the start of the Sunset League race which they begin Friday (March 28) by hosting Newport Harbor at 5:30 p.m.

Defending champion Huntington has won 20 consecutive league matches, 19 by sweep.

“I feel like we have had success so far this season, but we still have a long way to go, to get to where we want to be,” Pazanti said. “Newport is always a tough opponent, so we will need to be ready Friday night. They are well-coached and will play hard.

•Edison (4-8) finished in fourth place in Division 1 at the Orange County Championships. The Chargers’ Chandler Gibb was named all-tournament.

“It was a good tournament for us,” Edison Coach Trent Jackson said. “I have seen a lot of improvement since the beginning of March.”

The Chargers travel to Marina for a 5:30 p.m. Sunset League opener Thursday.

•Marina (10-3) won its pool bracket and went 3-1 overall in Division 2 at the Orange County Championships. The Vikings went 3-0 in pool play, knocking off El Dorado (25-27, 25-19, 15-12), Irvine (28-26, 25-18) and Francis Parker (16-25, 25-19, 15-10), before they fell in the division quarterfinals to Capistrano Valley (15-25, 17-25).

“We had a successful tournament in winning our pool,” Marina Coach Rob Kijewski said. “Unfortunately, we were matched up with the best team in the (Division 2) tournament, Capo Valley, in the first round of the playoffs. I would have preferred to see them in a later round.

“Our guys continue to improve and compete harder,. It was a good tournament for us to play in right before we start our Sunset League play.”

Boys’ Tennis

Ocean View, coming off a one win season, won its third-straight match and fourth, overall, in the 2014 season Tuesday by defeating visiting Loara, 13-5, to win its Golden West League opener. Khang Vo, Jacob Azoulay and Liam Shweyk swept in singles play and the trio dropped only 10 games in nine sets. The Seahawks’ No. 1 doubles team of Spencer Hagaman and Andy Vieyra won two of three sets (0-6, 6-4, 6-1) to secure the victory.

Ocean View (4-3 overall) previously took a pair of nonleague matches, defeating Anaheim, 13-5, and Los Amigos, 9-9 (77-73 in games). In the Los Amigos win, the Seahawks swept in singles but dropped all nine doubles sets and the outcome was determined on total games won. Shweyk, Azoulay and Vo dropped only 19 games during their singles wins, and the Seahawks won 23 more games in doubles play, to take a 77-73 win.

Local athletes named all-CIF in soccer

Edison senior forward MacKenzie Cerda has been named the Most Valuable Player for the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 girls’ soccer team.

Joining Cerda on the Division 1 team is teammate Danielle Thomas, a junior defender.

Two members of the Edison boys’ soccer team, senior forward Connor Gordon and senior defender Ty O’Connor, were named to the All-CIF-SS Division 1 boys’ soccer team.
