Two Marina High girls’ relay teams went into the school’s track and field record books last weekend at the California Relays in Norwalk.

On the opening day of the California Relays at Cerritos College Friday, the Vikings’ foursome of Sara Van Dyke (1,200), Julia Robinson (400), Emily Taylor (800) and Laura Hollander (mile) set a new school record at 12 minutes 31.10 seconds in the Distance Medley Relay. On Saturday, Van Dyke, Katie Durant, Taylor and Hollander established a new record time of 21:24.80 in the 4 X 1,600, bettering the previous school record by more than 26 seconds, Marina Coach Dick Degen said.

“It was awesome,” Hollander said. “I was really happy with how we did in the Distance Medley Friday and we came back really pumped up on Saturday and set another record. This is the first school record I’ve been a part of and it feels great.”

The two relay teams weren’t the only record-setting performances by Marina athletes at the California Relays. Karl Baranov set a meet time of 9:14.43 in the Boys’ Invitational 3,200 race. Another top finish was turned in by Karl Wenberg, who ran 1:58:35 in the Boys’ Invitational 800 to finish second.
