A good week for locals

Marina, Huntington Beach and Edison opened the Sunset League baseball schedule with victories, Ocean View started its bid for a repeat Golden West League title with a win and in softball, Edison was impressive in the previous week in winning the Laguna Hills Tournament championship.

In Sunset baseball openers Friday, Marina won 4-2 at Newport Harbor, Huntington Beach staged a big-time, sixth-inning rally to overtake Los Alamitos, 5-4, and Edison began defense of its league title with a 7-0 win at Fountain Valley.

In Marina’s 4-2 win over Newport Harbor, Jake Tillinghast pitched 6 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before giving up a hit to Matt Carpenter in the bottom of the seventh. Tillinghast (3-0) got charged with a run in the inning and had his scoreless streak stopped at 19 innings. Mitch Huffman replaced Tillinghast in the frame and picked up his third save.

Trevor Megill had two runs batted in and Kevin Isa and Nick Marshall each knocked in a run to give Robert Marshall his first Sunset League victory as head coach of the Vikings.

“My team came ready to play,” Robert Marshall said. “We had a great week of practice and the boys were prepared, relaxed and confident. That is all I can ask of them. We always have a tough time against Newport at their yard. Newport made a few incredible defensive plays that kept the game close. However, we had Jake Tillinghast on the hill and he dominated the game. Jake is a true competitor and he wants the ball and it shows when he steps on the field.

“Like I said earlier, my boys are great. They’re motivated and focused on competing on every pitch. The Sunset League is always tough. There is no easy game and you better be ready to compete with each and every opponent. It was great to get my first Sunset League win and get going in the right direction.

Marina also played a doubleheader Saturday against former Sunset League rival Esperanza. The teams split the twin bill with the Vikings holding on for a 6-5 win in the first game but falling, 10-2, in the second game. In the opening game, Austin Olivas earned the victory and Isa had two hits and three RBIs. Kevin Viers hit a two-run home run for the Vikings in the second game.

Huntington Beach trailed Los Alamitos, 4-1, but scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 5-4 victory. With two-out and the bases loaded, Sean Anderson hit a two-run single followed by a pinch hit two-run double by Jake Porter. Anderson then pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

On Saturday, the Oilers swept a doubleheader from Garden Grove, winning 6-0 and 4-0. In the two games, Brett Urabe went five for nine with three triples and four RBIs and Garrick Danner and Mark Johnston each threw six innings of shutout ball to earn victories.

Edison took a 7-0 win at Fountain Valley behind a two-hit, 11-strikeout performance by Henry Owens who improved to 3-0. Offensively for the Chargers, Jake Lesinski drove in two runs, Jon Torres had a two-run triple and both Cody Schneekluth and Christian Lopes doubled.

Friday’s Sunset schedule has Marina playing at Los Alamitos (3:15 p.m.), Huntington Beach home to Fountain Valley (3 p.m.) and Edison hosting Newport Harbor (3 p.m.).

Ocean View started its Golden West League schedule with a 14-8 win over Orange in a game where the teams combined for 30 hits with Ocean View getting 18. The Seahawks scored seven of their runs in the opening inning. Blake Walker, Timmy Robinson, Travis Sparks-Jackson and Trey Gourdine all singled and Freddy Sepulveda and Colton Johnson both tripled. Sparks-Jackson went three for three with four RBIs.

Softball

Edison won the Laguna Hills Tournament at Alicia Park in Mission Viejo with a 5-0 record. The Chargers routed Capo Valley (16-0) in their opener, took down Rosary (4-2) next, then handed host Laguna Hills an 8-0 shutout loss in the semifinal round. On March 17, the Chargers scored all four of their runs in the top of the third inning and went on to defeat Orange Lutheran, 4-1, in the title game.

Edison’s Carissa Sherman and Karley Wester were named to the all-tournament team. Ally Hecht was named tournament defensive MVP.

“We played incredible softball by taking each inning one pitch at a time,” Edison Coach Kendra Rosales said. “Offensively, we never settled and constantly pursued more runs. Overall, through great pitching and amazing team communication, we were able to claim the title of tourney champs.”

The Chargers host Irvine at 3:15 today and travel Tuesday (3:15 p.m.) to face Camarillo.

Huntington Beach and Marina also concluded play March 17 at the Laguna Hills Tournament.

Huntington Beach closed out its tourney run with a 5-4 loss to Rosary. Vicky Galasso, Emily Stoner and Jacqui Pascual each had two hits to lead a nine-hit attack for the Oilers who finished eighth in the event.

Marina completed the tournament by holding off Northwood, 4-2. Freshman pitcher Tera Blanco went the distance for the pitching win and also doubled and teammate Sandy Simmons also doubled.

Ocean View scored a 4-0 win over Rosary March 16 with freshman Tobi Salzman leading the Seahawks’ attack with two hits and a two-run home run. On March 17, Celine Fuentes pitched a complete game to record her third victory and catcher Sarah Craig threw out three runners on steal attempts and also picked off a runner at third base in the seventh inning, in a 2-1 win over Mission Viejo.

Ocean View played two games Saturday at the Timberwolf Classic. In a tournament opener, the Seahawks saw a 3-0 lead disappear in the seventh when Gahr scored four runs on just one hit to pull out a 4-3 win. Later in the day, the Seahawks rebounded to score a 10-3 win over San Juan Hills. Vanessa Cardoza had three hits to lead seven Seahawks who contributed to an 11-hit attack.
