Nine earn All-CIF nods

Guards Maya Kennedy and Kelsey Minato — two key figures in leading the Huntington Beach High girls’ basketball team to a share of the Sunset League championship and a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 1A title game — have been named to the 2011-12 All CIF-Southern Section Division 1A Team.

The 10-member team was headed by senior Jillian Alleyne of Summit, who was named Player of the Year. Summit, which defeated Huntington Beach in the Division 1A championship game in early March at Anaheim Arena, also had LaTrina Duncan named Coach of the Year.

In boys’ basketball, Edison senior guard Dreon Barlett was named to the All-CIF Division 1A Team, Ocean View senior center Conor Clifford was named to the All-CIF Division 2AA team and junior Mamadou Ndiaye of Brethren Christian was named to the All-CIF Division 5AA team.

Boys’ Soccer

Marina seniors David Elias and Kevin Moses picked up two top awards on the 2012 All-Sunset League team. Elias, a goalie, was named league MVP. Moses, a defender, was named league Defensive MVP. They are two of 10 Vikings to make the all-league team. Jeff Schofield, who guided the Vikings to the league championship, was named Coach of the Year.

Both Elias and Moses also were named to the 2011-12 All CIF Southern Section Division 1 team. Vikings teammate Josue Medina, a senior, made the Division 1 second team.

Ocean View senior forward Joel Contreras was named to the All-CIF Division 2 team.

“I am extremely proud of David and Kevin,” said Schofield, whose Vikings reached the Division 1 semifinals. “They are both very hard-working and intelligent soccer players [who] have represented their team and school well.”

Boys’ Volleyball

The Orange County Championships tournament concluded Monday at Edison High, where Newport Harbor defeated rival Corona del Mar, 25-20, 27-25, to win the Division 1 final and El Toro took the Division 2 title by sweeping Crespi, 25-21, 25-22.

The three-day tournament, which included Edison, Fountain Valley and Marina among 24 teams competing in the Division 1 bracket, started with pool play Friday.
