Softball teams take their lumps

Victory eluded several local prep softball teams who were in nonleague and tournament action on Tuesday.

Marina dropped its first game of the 2013 season in a 2-1 loss to Capistrano Valley at the Laguna Hills Tournament. Junior pitcher Tera Blanco struck out 10 and senior Sam Agamaite went two for three to lead the Vikings.

In their tournament opener Monday, Blanco tamed San Juan Hills hitters with 14 strikeouts and senior Sydnee Cable went three for three with two RBIs, as the Vikings beat the Stallions, 7-0.

Marina, 4-1 overall, took on Orange Lutheran in tournament action on Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time. The tournament wraps Thursday .

“Inconsistent,” was how Marina Coach Shelly Luth described her team’s start to the tournament. “In order to be a successful team, you have to play your best every day.”

The Vikings will go from the Laguna Hills Tournament, on to the Foothill Tournament. They play two games on Saturday starting with a 9 a.m. opener against Rosary.

At Ocean View Tuesday, the host Seahawks were handed their first loss of the season by Western which took a 2-1 victory. Coach Mike McLaughlan said the Seahawks again received “outstanding pitching” from sophomore Billi Derleth and senior Brittany Hitchcock who allowed five hits and one earned run.

Ocean View staged a late-inning comeback that started with a triple by sophomore Olivia Russ and a single by junior Tobi Salzman, to get within one run. The Seahawks had runners at first and third base with one out, but couldn’t produce the tying run.

Ocean View (5-1) competed last week at the Costa Mesa Tournament which was delayed by rain on Saturday (March 9). The Seahawks, the top-seed in the tournament, scored a 5-0 tournament win Monday over No. 4-seeded Westminster. Russ went two for three with a double and RBI and Hitchcock (4-0) took the win.

The Seahawks complete a three-game home stand on Thursday by hosting Newport Harbor at 3:15 p.m. They start play on Saturday at the Northwood/Timberwolf Classic at 4 p.m. against Aliso Niguel at Bill Barber Park In Irvine.

In other nonleague games played Tuesday, Edison lost, 5-3, at Kennedy, and Huntington Beach fell, 9-1, to Beckman. The Chargers start play Thursday at the Best of the West Tournament at Pacifica High. The Oilers will host Cerritos Monday at 6 p.m. in nonleague play.
