Briefs: Red Bull Switchboard rolls through HB

The Red Bull Switchboard, a one-day surfing and snowboarding competition that takes collegiate athletes from Huntington Beach and San Diego, to Big Bear Lake, is Saturday.

The action sports event, which has invited 500 college students from more than 25 colleges and universities from Southern California, starts with the surfing portion of the competition from 7 to 9 a.m. at La Jolla Shorts Park in San Diego, and 8 to 10 a.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Goldenwest Street in Huntington Beach. The competition switches gears to the snowboarding portion from noon to 5 p.m. at Bear Mountain Resort at Big Bear Lake.

Among the participants is professional surfer Jamie Sterling and professional snowboarder John Jackson.

Triathlon set for April 6

The inaugural Huntington Beach Triathlon will take place April 6. The event, also known as, “Surf City Sprint,” is a sprint distance triathlon that is comprised of a one-half mile swim, 10-mile bike course, and 2.5-mile beach run. The triathlon will start at 8 a.m. near lifeguard tower No. 8 at Huntington State Beach. The bike course will take place along the Santa Ana River Bike Trial. Participants will finish the course by completing a 2.5-mile beach run.

Chris “Macca” McCormack, a two-time Ironman World Champion and five-time International Triathlete of the Year, is schedule to compete at the event.
