Baseball Roundup: Barons stand out in Loara tourney

As the Loara Tournament, one of the top prep baseball tournaments in Orange County, moved into its final stages of a week’s worth of competition, local teams Edison, Fountain Valley and Marina picked up victories on Tuesday.

Edison edged La Mirada, 3-2, Fountain Valley blanked El Toro, 5-0, and Marina pinned a 2-0 defeat on Long Beach Wilson. The Barons were one victory away from playing from the tournament title.

Edison: The Chargers ran its record to 2-1 and moved into the Loara Tournament consolation semifinals by coming back from a 2-1 deficit, to down La Mirada, 3-2. Joey DeMarco, Johnathan Freedman and Jake Scott each had an RBI in the win. Starter Noah Kronfly earned his first pitching win and Tyler Jones got the save.

Edison started its season and the tournament on Feb. 28 and dropped a 4-0 game to Cypress. The Chargers on Saturday scored a 4-0 win over Anaheim.

Fountain Valley: The Barons (5-0) moved on to the championship semifinals of the Loara Tournament after their 5-0 win against El Toro. Jordan Lucio went three for four Jacob Peralta and Justin Brand both doubled in going two for three, Daniel Patzlaff also went two for three, and starter Hunter Morgan (1-0) earned the pitching win.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers won two of their first three games at the Newport Elks Tournament. Huntington opened the tournament with a 4-1 victory Feb. 28 over JSerra. The Oilers were then defeated, 5-2, on Saturday by Capistrano Valley, but bounced back Monday with a 12-4 win over Bishop Amat.

Dillon Millar went two for three with a triple and RBI and Noah Davis earned his second pitching win of the season in the 4-1 decision over host JSerra. Jesse Kuet went two for three with a double, home run and RBI in the 5-2 home loss at Capo Valley. Logan Pouelson doubled in three runs in the fifth inning to put Huntington in front of Bishop Amat, and Marcus Mayorga added a two-run single to extend the lead over the Lancers. Tyler Murray went three for three with a double and two RBIs in the win.

Huntington, 4-1 overall, was scheduled to play its fourth tournament game, a semifinal game, Wednesday against Orange Lutheran. The score wasn’t available at press time.

“I like our team,” Oilers Coach Benji Medure said. “I feel like we are learning how to handle adverse situations and how to battle. We are going to need those tools when we start Sunset League play. Every game is a battle in league.”

Marina: The Vikings went to 2-1 at the Loara Tournament by shutting down Long Beach Wilson, 2-0, in a seventh-place consolation quarterfinal. Jack Westermeyer went the distance, striking out five to go along with a five-hitter to go to 1-0. Jake Bauers hit a two-run home run in the opening inning and both Jake Arledge and Tyler Mildenberg doubled.

Marina split its first two games at the Loara Tournament last weekend. Marina dropped its season opener, 2-1, at Dana Hills Friday, but came back Saturday to get its initial win, 9-0, against Kennedy.

In the 2-1 loss to Dana Hills, Austin Olivas threw six innings and allowed only three hits and one run with six strikeouts, and senior Casey Hayes homered for the Vikings. In the 9-0 win over Kennedy, Steven Gingery struck out five and allowed three hits in a five-inning pitching effort that Marina Coach Bob Marshall said was “a gem.” Max Gibbs threw the final two innings and struck out three.

The Marina offense was led by junior Landon Marshall who had three hits and two RBIs, Austin Sojka with two hits and two RBIs, Bauers had a pair of hits, and Justin Neese who drove in two runs.

“Austin Olivas threw a great game and our offense did not show up,” Bob Marshall said of the opener against Dana Hills. “Our offense did not show up, plain and simple. We collected only three hits and we were not effective in any offensive category. Olivas throws six innings, allowing one run on three hits, and our offense could not support him. Rough game for us but we had to let it go and bounce back the next day, which we did against Kennedy.”

Marina finishes tournament play with games on Thursday and Saturday.

Ocean View

The Seahawks dropped their second game at the Foothill Tournament Tuesday in a 13-5 loss to host Beckman.

Jared Goodman had a big day at the plate for the Seahawks going three for four with a two-run double in third inning and another double in the sixth. Ramon Sepulveda and Luke Fell (double) each had an RBI.

Ocean View started the tournament Feb. 28 at home against Newport Harbor and was defeated by the Sailors, 7-2. Senior Jared Goodman led the Seahawks on offense with two doubles and two RBIs.

The Seahawks (1-3) won their first tournament game Saturday by scoring an 8-6 home win over San Juan Hills. Senior Luke Fell hit his first home run of the season and went two for two with four RBIs. Goodman pitched a complete game, striking out four to get his first win, and also hit a home run and collected three RBIs.

“It was great to come back and get a win on Saturday against San Juan Hills,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said. “We went down early, and then went down some more, but clutch home runs by the two seniors [Fell and Goodman], really was a shot in the arm for our struggling offense.

“I’ve been telling them all along that hitting was contagious, and Saturday it proved to be true. We have a long ways to go, but the signs of improvement are there.”
