Baseball, softball seasons open for locals

The 2011 prep baseball and softball seasons begin this weekend for six local schools.

The baseball schedule Friday has Brethren Christian hosting Saddleback Valley Christian at 3 p.m., Edison playing Pacifica at 3 p.m. in the Loara Tournament at Glover Field in Anaheim, Fountain Valley hosting Vista Murrieta at 3 p.m. in the Loara Tournament, Huntington Beach taking on Santiago/Corona at 3 p.m. in the Newport Elks/Foothill Tournament, Marina playing at 3 p.m. at El Dorado in the Loara Tournament and Ocean View playing Irvine at 3 p.m. in the Newport Elks/Foothill tournament.

The softball schedule Friday (3:15 p.m.) has Marina hosting Rosary and Ocean View home to Cypress. At 11 a.m. Saturday, Huntington Beach takes on Brethren Christian in the Costa Mesa Tournament. Fountain Valley opens at home at 3 p.m. Monday against Canyon/Canyon Country and Edison begins its season at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Yorba Linda.

Baseball teams top first CIF spring polls

The start of the 2011 spring sports season begins with two local prep baseball teams launching their respective seasons at No. 1.

Edison tops Division 1 and defending CIF champ Ocean View heads Division 3 in the initial baseball polls. The Chargers and Seahawks are the only two local baseball teams to begin the season ranked.

In softball, Marina comes in at No. 5 in Division 1 and Ocean View is fifth in Division 4. In boys’ volleyball, Huntington Beach and Edison rank No. 7 and No. 8, respectively, in Division 1.

Los Cab Grind hoops clinics open

The Los Cab Grind Academy Basketball Clinic for seventh- and eighth-grade boys will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and March 10 at Los Caballeros sports complex in Fountain Valley (17272 Newhope St.). Clinic instruction covers advanced fundamentals, ball handling, press, flex-motion offense, flex defense, form shooting, footwork and scrimmages.

Matt Beeuwsaert — a former All-CIF Player of the Year and McDonalds All-American who played at both Cal and Notre Dame and 10 years of professional basketball — is a clinic instructor/coach.
