Oilers team up with Surfrider
The Huntington Beach High baseball program teamed up with Surfrider Foundation on Feb. 16 for a beach clean-up session.
The Oilers' coaching staff, 63 players from the varsity, junior varsity and frosh/soph teams, and parents of players, collected 96 pounds of trash in two hours on a 1.6-mile stretch of beach between the Huntington Beach Pier and Goldenwest Street, Huntington Coach Benji Medure said.
"I like our players to be well-rounded young men and I felt this was a good opportunity to learn a valuable lesson," said Medure who noted that his program took park in the clean-up for the first time, but plans to make the effort an annual event. "I want them to be environmentally conscious and understand the positive impact they can have on our planet. It really hit home with our boys how neglectful and irresponsible people are with our prized beach.
"It was an awesome experience for our program. Definitely an eye-opener. If anything, they will at least clean up after themselves next time they surf."
