Returning all-league players: Jones, Schales.

The schedule: The Chargers, who have won the Sunset League title four of the last six years and have reached the playoffs seven straight years, open their schedule at the Loara Tournament. They’ll also play at the National Classic over spring break.

Coach’s outlook: “I have had some powerhouse teams over the last few years with a lot of great talent,” Lambright said. “This year’s team will need to play the game right for us to have success. The goal for us this year, like always, is to win the Sunset League. This can be accomplished this year if my pitchers throw strikes, we play solid defense, and we get key hits with runners in scoring position. This is a team that cannot rely on two or three players to carry us. Everyone needs to contribute.”

Season opener: vs. Cypress, 3 p.m., Thursday (Loara Tournament).

Huntington Beach Oilers

League: Sunset

Head Coach: Benji Medure (13th year)

2012 record: 20-9

League finish: Fourth

CIF playoff results: 2-1, reached second-round Division 1.

Returning players: Clint Jack, RF, Jr.; Jesse Kuet, SS, Jr.; Jake Caron, 2B, Sr.; Marcus Mayorga, LF, Jr.; Jake Brodt, 1B/P, Jr.; Andrew Arledge, P, Jr.; Dillon Millar, CF, Jr.; Robert Baker, LHP, Sr.

The schedule: The Oilers opened their season Saturday and took a nonleague doubleheader from Ocean View. This week, they start play at the Newport Elks Tournament and start with games against JSerra, Capistrano Valley and Bishop Amat. They’ll also open up against Concord De La Salle at the National Classic over spring break.

Coach’s outlook: Anchoring the Huntington lineup are three-year starters Kuet and Caron. Arledge was 3-0 on the mound last year. “I feel like this is the most balanced team that we have had in a long time,” Medure said. “We just happened to be very young. We may take our lumps at times because we are learning on the fly, but ability-wise, we match up well with the league. The Sunset League is vicious and our nonleague schedule is just as tough. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.”

Season opener: def. Ocean View, 5-0 and 15-0, Saturday.

Returning all-league players: Marshall, Mildenberg, Arledge, Sojka, Bauers, Westermeyer, Olivas.

The schedule: The Vikings open their season Friday at the Loara Tournament, and play in the Ryan Lemmon Tournament over spring break. “Both tournaments will be a great challenge to our ballclub,” Bob Marshall said. “Sunset league is always a dog fight. I said it last year, and I will say it again: any team can beat anyone. I have never seen a Sunset League baseball team go undefeated or have I seen a team go without a victory. Its exciting to watch Sunset League baseball. Each coach in this league prepares his team well and gets the maximum out of them. I always look forward to competing against the coaches in this league. They are some of the finest.”

Coach’s outlook: “This year’s team has a lot of varsity experience and I have 18 seniors that are determined and believe they can compete with anyone,” Marshall said. “If we can stay hungry and humble we will be in every ball game. I am proud of these young men and together as a team we will be focused on accomplishing our goals as a team in order for us to succeed as a team.”
