Briefs: HB All-Star team wins AYSO regional title

The AYSO Region 143 (Huntington Beach) under-10 division boys’ Gold All-Star team won a title and the Silver All-Star team took second place Saturday at the AYSO Region 11-K All-Star Tournament at Dan Young Field in Santa Ana.

The Gold All-Star team won its division title by downing Region 177 (Long Beach), 4-2, in the final. Braeden Koch and Jared Rhone led the defense and goalie Cole Kaplan made several stops in the title game.

Dane Brenton, Cooper Livingston, Damien Campos, Gavin Langer, Gareth Keeler, Wyatt David and Mason Kelly, made up a powerful offense that scored 16 goals as the team went 4-1 during the tournament. The Gold All-Star team is coached by Michael Koch, Larry Kelly and Tim Keeler.

The Silver All-Star team outscored its five tournament opponents, 19-5, on its way to a 4-1 tourney record and a second-place standing. Zak Vanwaardenburg and Broc Coward led a Huntington defense, goalie Gavin Camarena recorded two shutouts and also had two, one-goal games, and a well-balanced offense was anchored by Jake Cataldo, Sean Hice, James Ralston, Nic Salcido, Jay Schulze, Mac Street and Andrew Cook. The Silver All-Star team is coached by Chris Street and Phil Hice.

Merk, Bailey win JO titles

Two Huntington Beach swimmers on a Splash Aquatics relay team helped lead the quartet to a first-place finish Saturday at the Junior Olympics at Golden West College in Huntington Beach.

Vince Merk and Jacob Bailey of Huntington, both 9, and Spencer Clark and Aaron Clark, both of Newport Beach and also 9, teamed to win the boys’ 200-yard medley relay in the 5-10 age division in a time of 2 minutes, 19.75 seconds. The finish earned the team a bronze medal and was the first relay medal won by a Splash relay team at the Junior Olympics.

Splash Aquatics is based in Costa Mesa.

Volleyball fundraiser

The Huntington Beach High boys’ volleyball program is holding an E-waste fundraiser to raise funds to send its teams to various tournaments in the upcoming 2013 season.

Collections are now underway and E-waste recyclables can be dropped off at the school parking lot between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. To arrange a pick-up before Saturday’s drop-off date, call Therese Butler at (714) 724-2453.

Fignetti captures title

Rick Fignetti of Huntington Beach won two division competitions Feb.9 at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. Southwest Conference Explorer Division (Event No. 8) at the Oceanside Jetty.

Fignetti finished first in both the Explorer Super Seniors and Duke divisions. Terry Carmadella of Huntington Beach placed second in the Duke Division and Lee Toresdahl of Huntington Beach was fourth in Super Seniors.

Other top finishes Explorer division finishes for Huntington athletes included: Juniors (Chandler Stirrat, third; Andrew Niemann, fourth; Bryce Marino, 5.5-place); Boys (Conner Dawson, second; Brandon Clarke, third); Women’s (Madeleine Camargo, fifth); Girls (Samantha Cendro, third; Madeleine Camargo, sixth).
