The 2012-13 girls’ soccer season ended Tuesday for Edison and Ocean View.

The host Chargers were eliminated, 1-0, in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 second-round game by defending champion Aliso Niguel, while the Seahawks also fell by a 1-0 score to Oxnard Pacifica (Pacific View League No. 2) in a Division 6 second-round game at Ocean View.

Edison, the second-place team from the Sunset League, concluded a 16-4-4 season.

Aliso Niguel is the second-place team from the South Coast League.

“It was a hard-fought game, but the bounces did not go our way,” Edison Coach Kerry “Mac” Crooks said.

Edison started postseason play Feb. 14 and blanked visiting Redlands East Valley (Citrus Belt League No. 3), 3-0. Mackenzie Cerda scored all three goals off assists from Brooke Lillywhite.

In its first-round game Feb. 14, Ocean View scored a 2-0 shutout of visiting Duarte (Montview League No. 2). Jade Kratovil and Sam Romo scored goals and Mikaela Malsy had an assist. Emma Malsy and Malia Hayes both had a save.

Ocean View, the second-place team from the Golden West League, ended the year 11-9-1.

Huntington Beach, the third-place team from the Sunset League, lost, 4-0, in a first-round game Feb. 14 to Century League runner-up Esperanza. The Oilers finished the year 8-7-6.

“We earned the respects of our opponents by playing every game with great pride and joy while always showing respect to our opponents,” Huntington Coach Raul Ruiz said. “Qualifying for CIF was our reward for believing in each other and our commitment to our team.”

Edison picked up a victory and Fountain Valley saw its season come to an end Friday in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Edison went on the road and took down host Long Beach Millikan, 2-1. Down a goal, Apolo Rosa scored the tying goal for the Chargers on a cross from Hunter Kelley. Adam Muñoz scored the game-winning goal late in the match on a long cross that eluded the Rams’ goalie.

Edison Coach Charlie Breneman said it was only the 13th time in 30 years that a Millikan team has lost on its home field.

The fifth-ranked Rams (19-3-6) were champions of the Moore League.

“The team came into the game with a great mentality,” Breneman said. “They were confident and put in the work to get a result. We asked the guys to sell out for each other and they did. It was a very emotional win. I couldn’t be more proud of the team.”

The Chargers, who finished third in the Sunset League and improved to 13-7-5 with the win, played host to JSerra (Trinity League No. 2) in a second-round game Wednesday. The score from the game wasn’t available at press time. The winner of Wednesday’s game advances to the division quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday. The division semifinals are at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Fountain Valley, the No. 2 team from the Sunset League, also was on the road Friday for its postseason opener and was edged, 1-0, by Channel League runner-up and ninth-ranked Santa Barbara.

The Barons finished the year 9-9-5.

Ocean View was the lone local team still alive in postseason play entering the week.

The Seahawks, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 7, advanced to the division semifinals by winning their first two games. The Golden West League champions opened the playoffs with a 10-2 win over La Puente (Valle Vista League No. 3) on Feb. 14. They held on for a 5-4 quarterfinal win Saturday over Beaumont (Mountain Pass League No. 2).

Ocean View (22-8) faced Mt. Baldy League champ Chino (21-7) Wednesday but the score from the semifinal game wasn’t available at press time.

The winner advances to face either No. 2-seed Citrus Valley or No. 3-seed Hemet Saturday in the division final at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine.

Ocean View Coach Melissa Fernandez said the program is making its first appearance in the semifinal round.

“We are really excited to be playing in the semifinals,” she said. “We need to take it one step at a time and focus on our game against Chino, before we think finals. But, a CIF title has been the girls’ ultimate goal for the season, all year, so I am really proud of how far they have come and am excited to make a run at it.”

Edison and Huntington Beach both dropped their first-round games in Santa Barbara in the Division 1 tournament on Feb. 13.

Edison was outscored, 6-3, in the second half by host San Marcos (Channel League No. 2) and ended up with an 11-8 loss to the Royals. Sabrina Jensen came off the bench and scored four goals for the Chargers. The sophomore scored 44 goals this season which is 24th all-time on the Edison single-season scoring list. Melissa Balding scored twice and finished with 59 goals on the year (16th all-time). Balding also broke the single-season school record for ejections drawn with 80, and set the new career mark for kick-outs (192), breaking the previous record of 165 set by Danielle Warde.

Risa Burke scored once to run her season goals total to 50 which is 19th all-time for the program. Delaney Cleveland also scored once. Junior goalie Josette Santos registered 14 saves, which included two blocks on a pair of five-meter shots in the second half.

Santos, who Edison Coach Diggy Riley said “played incredible and had another stellar game,” finished the year with a school-record 11 blocks on penalty shots.

“We knew traveling north that we were going to face a very tough San Marcos, who arguably was playing the best of any team in Division 1 team,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “We had beaten them twice in the [regular] season, but to me, that meant nothing. Our girls played with a lot of emotion and passion. I was so proud of this team and the season they had. They were really fun to coach and stayed focused the entire year. “

The Chargers, the third-place team from the Sunset League, ended the year 14-15.

Huntington played its opener at top-ranked Santa Barbara and lost, 17-7, to the Dons (25-4). Sammy Preston scored twice to lead the Oilers in scoring.

“Santa Barbara has a tough zone defense we were able to find holes in, but not enough,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “They are a solid team. I am proud of my girls this year. We had a tough schedule, and they were solid all the way through.”

The Oilers, an at-large playoff entry from the Sunset League, closed out the year at 15-14.
