Briefs: Blue Crushers earn third place in section tourney

The Blue Crushers, a girls’ under-10 team from AYSO Region 55 (Huntington Beach), took third place Sunday at the Section 11 tournament at Chapman Sports Park in Garden Grove.

The Blue Crushers are division champions in both Region 55 and Area K.

Cities represented at the Section 11 tournament included Huntington Beach, South Irvine, Bonita (San Diego), Downey, Cerritos, Ladera Ranch, San Marcos and La Mesa.

The Blue Crushers opened the tournament Saturday with a 2-0 shutout of South Irvine, then scored a 3-1 win over the Cherry Bomb Crushers from Bonita. In their third game, the Blue Crushers suffered their first loss of the season when they were defeated, 3-1 by Downey.

In the third-place game against the Cerritos Goal Getters, the Blue Crushers used a big second half to overcome a 2-0 deficit to post a 3-2 victory. Vanessa Tapia, Annika Wiederin and Nicole Serrano scored goals and the defensive stand of Sophia Harmon, Grace Anderegg, Amanda Khoury and goalie Skyler MacDuff held the Goal Getters scoreless down the stretch.

Congratulations to the Huntington Beach Blue Crushers from Region 55. The Blue Crushers, coached by Mark Rule and Dave Weiderin, are: Lindsay Rule, Annika Wiederin, Vanessa Tapia, Sophia Harmon, Grace Anderegg, Amanda Khoury, Skyler MacDuff, Nicole Serrano and Midori Chaney-Russell.

HB Fundraiser

The Huntington Beach High boys’ volleyball program is holding an E-waste fundraiser to raise funds to send its teams to various tournaments in the upcoming 2013 season.

Collections are now underway and E-waste recyclables can be dropped off at the school parking lot between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Feb. 23. To arrange a pick-up before the Feb. 23 drop-off date, call Therese Butler at (714) 724-2453.

Camp taking place at Marina

A Youth Strength and Speed Camp is underway at Marina High.

Camp sessions are from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. every Monday through Thursday at the school’s track until June 6.

The sessions are open to youth in grades sixth through eighth and are geared to prep athletes to compete on the track, field or court. Sessions will focus on speed development and mobility through strength, power, explosiveness, technique, safety, change of direction and sprinting mechanics, conditioning, injury prevention, leadership and character and work ethic development.

The cost is $5 per session and one-on-one sessions are available.

Youth will be coached by George Pascoe (Marina varsity football head coach), Andrew Bonsall (Marina freshman football head coach), and Turill Engleman (Marina varsity football speed and strength coach).
