High School Roundup: Playoff bonanza for local teams

Several local boys’ and’ girls’ soccer and girls’ water polo teams earned berths earlier this week to the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

The girls’ water polo playoffs started Tuesday. First-round girls’ soccer games begin Thursday and first-round boys’ soccer playoffs open Friday. The CIF Southern Section Individual Wrestling Divisional Championships run Friday and Saturday.

Edison: The Chargers enter the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs Thursday and play host to Redlands East Valley at 5 p.m.

Edison finished in second place in the Sunset League after scoring a 2-1 victory Feb. 7 at Huntington Beach. Mackenzie Cerda scored both goals and Jordyn Gressier assisted both goals.

“We had a great game against Huntington where I felt we played some great team defense, which I hope translates to CIF,” Edison Coach Kerry “Mac” Crooks said.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers launch postseason play Thursday with a first-round Division 1 game at Esperanza.

Huntington, the No. 3 team from the Sunset League, is 8-6-6 overall. The Oilers dropped a 2-1 decision Feb. 7 to visiting Edison. Abby Masters scored off a feed from Dottie Rhotten, and Kate Hart and Jane Potter both had four saves.

Esperanza is the No. 2 team out of the Century League and is 13-5-6 overall.

“Psychologically, we establish an attitude that we can compete with the best no matter where we play,” Huntington Coach Raul Ruiz said. “Our minds and spirits are high, our team chemistry is stronger and our determination to win is becoming our passion.”

Ocean View: The Seahawks captured second place in the Golden West League on Feb. 7 by blanking Loara, 1-0. Jade Kratovil scored off an assist from Dani Dapello. Emma Malsy had four saves.

Ocean View (10-8-1) starts Division 6 postseason play at 5 p.m. Thursday at home against Duarte. The Falcons (8-10-2) are the No. 2 team from the Montview League.

Fountain Valley, Marina: Fountain Valley used first-half goals by Madison Gomez and Kasey Reeve to turn back Marina, 2-0, on the final day of Sunset League and regular-season play for both teams on Feb. 7.

The Barons finished league play 1-7-2. The Vikings went 2-6-2 in league.

Boys’ Soccer

Edison: The Chargers qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs as the third-place team from the Sunset League. They travel Friday for a first-round game against defending division champion Long Beach Millikan.

The Rams (19-2-6) are champions of the Moore League and are the No. 5-ranked team in the division.

Edison enters postseason play with a 12-8-4 record.

“It doesn’t matter who you play in CIF, it’s always going to be tough,” Edison Coach Charlie Breneman said. “But, if our kids get up for the game, I think we have a very good shot at moving on.”

The Chargers ended regular-season play Feb. 6 with a 1-0 loss to Fountain Valley.

Fountain Valley: The Barons are heading north for their first-round CIF playoff game. The Sunset League’s No. 2 team, which is 9-8-5 overall, faces Channel League runner-up Santa Barbara.

The Dons are 19-4-2 overall and ranked ninth in the division.

Fountain Valley completed league and regular-season play Feb. 6 with a 1-0 victory over rival Edison. Joseph Soliman scored the decisive goal in the eighth minute, on a 20-yard free kick inside the right post

“This was a must-win game. The boys stepped up,” Fountain Valley Coach Jason Smith said. “The defense came up huge today and when we play like that, we can beat anybody.”

Huntington Beach: The Oilers played their final game of the 2012-13 season on Feb. 6 and lost, 2-0, to visiting Los Alamitos.

Huntington finished 2-6-2 in league play.

Marina: The Vikings dropped a 3-1 decision to host Newport Harbor in a Sunset League finale for both teams Feb. 6.

Marina also ended league play with a 2-6-2 record.

Girls’ Water Polo

Huntington Beach: The Oilers earned a spot in the CIF Division 1 postseason party as an at-large entry from the Sunset League and on Tuesday, they scored an impressive, 18-3 victory at Estancia (Orange Coast League No. 3).

Huntington shut out the Eagles in the first half in improving to 15-13 overall. Sammy Preston powered in seven goals, Megan Furry and Alyssa Clifford both scored twice and Hanna Lambur and Sabrina Nguyen both scored twice. Maya Jozefowicz-Wilde recorded seven saves.

“The girls were motivated and executed well,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “We are looking forward to our challenge against Santa Barbara.

Huntington traveled Wednesday to face top-ranked and Channel League champ Santa Barbara. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Edison: The Chargers finished in third place in the Sunset League and opened play Wednesday in the CIF Division 1 playoffs at seventh-ranked San Marcos (Channel League No. 2). The score from the game wasn’t available at press time.

Edison closed out its league and regular season Feb. 6 with a 9-7 victory over Huntington, getting the win by scoring the final three goals of the important league contest. Risa Burke led the scoring with four goals, Dana Kerins scored twice and Josette Santos had six saves for the Chargers.

Edison trailed, 4-2, in the second quarter and was down, 7-6, in the fourth quarter.

“We had a full week to prepare for Huntington, and we had a pretty good idea on what we needed to do at both ends of the pool to be successful,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “Coach [Brian] Anderson always gets his teams ready to play and the fact that a CIF berth was on the line, made it that much more intense.

“I am so proud of this group of girls. They have been so focused all year long, and have worked incredibly hard.”

Ocean View: The Golden West League champion Seahawks (20-8) begin their quest for the CIF Southern Section Division 7 title as the top seed in the postseason and play host to La Puente (Valle Vista League No. 3) Thursday.

The division quarterfinals are Saturday and semifinals are Wednesday.

Wrestling

Marina competed Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Dual Meet Wrestling Championships at Los Alamitos High. The Vikings were eliminated in their opening round Division 1 match by M.L. King of Riverside which advanced with a 43-38 victory.

The Vikings shared the Sunset League championship with Fountain Valley and Los Alamitos.

M.L. King was an at-large entry to the tournament from the Big VIII League.

Ryan Evans (106 weight class); Stuart Brown (113); Sean King (126); Ryker Coppa (145); Cameron Gorman (152); Colin Navickas (160, league champion); Vinny Lopiccolo (170); Elijah Gonzales (182, league champion); Zach Young (195); Christian Wance (220) and Mat Patterson (285) will represent the Vikings Friday at the CIF Southern Section Individual Wrestling Divisional Championships (East Division) at Oak Hills High in Hesperia.

Navickas is attempting to win his third consecutive division weight class championship, Marina Coach Chris Rasmussen said.

Edison, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach and Ocean View also will have several wrestlers competing at the individual championships starting Friday. Among those entered in the tournament are the Sunset League weight class champions: Edison (Kevin Nguyen, 126); Fountain Valley (Daniel Galdamez, 113; Josh Madrid, 132; Andrew Morgan,138; Steele Escobedo, 145; Nathan Bazan, 152; Bryant Vasquez, 220); Huntington Beach (Jason Orozco, 106).

The tournaments concludes Saturday.
