Williams sets career scoring mark

Senior Alys Williams set the career scoring record for Edison girls’ water polo when the Chargers defeated Fountain Valley, 16-6, in a Sunset League game Feb. 1.

Williams, who will play next year at UCLA, scored six goals and also had seven steals. Her scoring tally broke the previous career record of 322 set by Danielle Warde, who is now at UC Irvine. Williams had 327 goals going into Wednesday’s league finale against first-place Newport Harbor. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Edison (3-1 in league) competed last weekend at the Irvine Southern California Championships and came up with a seventh-place finish in the 32-team event. In opening-day action Friday, the Chargers defeated Cathedral Catholic (19-6) and Murrieta Valley (9-8). In the quarterfinals, they faced Corona del Mar, the then-top ranked team in CIF Division 1. The score was tied, 6-6, at the half, but the Sea Kings went on to score a 12-8 victory.

On Saturday, Edison lost to Santa Barbara, 4-2, but returned to down Dos Pueblos, 11-9, in the seventh-place game. Coach Diggy Riley said it was Edison’s first win over Dos Pueblos and allowed the Chargers (15-10) to avenge a 14-2 loss to Dos Pueblos earlier this season.

Williams was named to the all-tournament team for the second straight year.

“Our girls played exceptionally well over the weekend,” Riley said. “I am so proud of how they have turned this season around after a rough mid-season. We truly believe we can play against any team and we have proved that this past month. Our goalie, Sydni (Estrella), really stepped up and showed what she is really capable of and Alys had a great weekend as well for us.”

In other Sunset League games Feb. 1, Huntington Beach (20-7, 1-3 league) fell, 17-6, to fifth-ranked Los Alamitos, and Marina (15-8, 0-4) was defeated, 14-3, by second-ranked Newport Harbor.

Girls’ Soccer

League championship hopes for two local girls’ soccer teams hang in the balance Thursday on the final day of the regular season.

Edison set up a Sunset League title match showdown with Los Alamitos by rallying in the second half on Tuesday for a 3-1 victory at Marina. Kelsey Wetzstein had two assists and scored the winning goal. Kelsey McKay and Brooke Lillywhite also scored, Liz Grote had an assist and Natalie McNeely had a save for the Chargers (14-5-5), who ran their league mark to 6-1-2.

Shannon Butler and Sydney McCollum scored and Arianna Sisson had eight saves for the Vikings, who slipped to 2-7 in league.

Edison used a goal by senior Angelisa Cortez, off an assist by Lillywhite, to post a 1-0 victory over Huntington Beach, which avenged its only league loss last month to the Oilers.

Edison, which hasn’t lost in its last eight league outings, goes to Los Alamitos (6-1-2 league) for a 3:15 p.m. game Thursday that will determine the league champion. Edison defeated Los Al, 1-0, on Jan. 19.

Marina ends its league schedule with a 5 p.m. game Thursday at Huntington Beach.

Huntington on Tuesday dropped a 2-0 Sunset League match at Newport Harbor. The Sailors (5-3-1 league) clinched third place and a CIF playoff berth with the win. The Oilers fell to 2-5-2 in league.

Fountain Valley was shut out, 2-0, by Los Al and had a two-game win streak snapped by the co-league leading Griffins. The Barons previously shut out Marina, 1-0, on Feb. 2. The score came in the first half when Kasey Reeve scored off a pass from Madison Gomez. Goalie Alison Marlow had five saves.

The Barons (2-6-1 league) finish Sunset play Thursday hosting Newport Harbor at 3 p.m.

Ocean View set up a Golden West League title showdown Thursday against Segerstrom by blanking host Santa Ana, 3-0, on Tuesday. Freshman forward Jade Kratovil scored off an assist from junior midfielder Danny Dapello and Dapello also assisted a goal by freshman defender Casey Dooley. Senior midfielder Kelley Dooley scored off an assist from senior defender Amira Shweyk. Freshman goalie Malia Hayes turned in eight saves.

The Seahawks had suffered their first league loss Feb. 1 in a 2-1 setback to Loara. Dooley scored the lone goal and Hayes had six saves.

Ocean View Coach David Deaton said that the Seahawks (18-4-1, 8-1 in league) need only a tie against Segerstrom to become co-champions. A tie or win Thursday would give the Seahawks their first league title since 2008. Thursday’s game is at 3:15 p.m. at Ocean View.

Boys’ Soccer

Marina came up with a crucial road victory Friday by shutting out Fountain Valley, 2-0. Senior Josue Medina scored a goal in each half, senior Luis Barajas had an assist and senior goalie David Elias got the shutout on five saves for the Vikings, who defeated Fountain Valley for the third time this season (twice in league) and overtook the Barons for the league lead at 6-1-2. The Barons fell to 6-2-1 in league.

Edison turned two key second-half plays, a goal by Jacob Rushing and big stop on a penalty kick attempt by goalie Scott Campbell, to come away with a 1-0 victory at Huntington Beach. It was the fifth stop of the game for Campbell and the save allowed the Chargers to run their league record to 3-4-2. Huntington’s league mark dipped to 1-8.

The final games in Sunset League action were played Wednesday, but final scores from the matches weren’t available at press time.
