Seahawks continue league dominance

The Ocean View boys’ basketball won another Golden West League championship Feb. 1, crushing Loara, 77-39. Since then, the Seahawks routed league foe Santa Ana and on Saturday scored a 92-80 nonleague victory over Mission Viejo, the No. 2-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 1A, at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High.

In the win over Santa Ana, senior Cristian Rivera scored 18 of the Seahawks’ 32 first-quarter points and went on to finish with a game-high 31 points. The victory put the Seahawks at 9-0 in league.

Ocean View has won or shared a league championship in 14 of the past 15 years.

The Seahawks showed their depth and balance in Saturday’s win over Mission Viejo. Senior center Conor Clifford had 26 points and 13 rebounds, junior guard Josh Mishler tallied 14 points with four assists and three steals, senior guard Robby Weaver 14 points, five assists and three steals, Rivera scored 10 points, freshman guard Kendall Small had nine points and three assists and sophomore guard Dillon Reise came off the bench to contribute 12 points.

“Conor was a beast,” Ocean View co-Coach Jimmy Harris said.

The win Saturday boosted Ocean View, the top-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 2AA, to 22-3 and put its win streak at 16 games.

“This was a great measure of our team’s ability to perform against deep, playoff talent,” Harris said of the Mission Viejo win. “We will use it as a preview of what type of challenges we may encounter in the playoffs.”

Brethren Christian: The Warriors sewed up their fourth consecutive Academy League title Tuesday by holding off holding off St. Margaret’s, 63-60, at Ocean View High. Junior center Mamadou Ndiaye scored a game-high 30 points and added 13 rebounds and four blocked shots for BC (21-5, 9-0 in league).

Previously, BC won at Sage Hill on Friday, 56-42, with Ndiaye getting half the Warriors’ point total. Billy Bryson added 12 points.

The Warriors conclude regular-season play at 8 p.m. Thursday against Oxford Academy at Liberty Christian School in Huntington Beach.

Edison: The Chargers remained alone in second place in the Sunset League after scoring a 66-52 win Tuesday at Marina. Senior guards Corey Foster and Dreon Barlett scored 21 points apiece and freshman guard Derek Molina added 10 points for Edison (19-6, 6-3).

Edison previously scored a 56-47 win Friday at Huntington Beach. The first quarter was all about Barlett, who went off in the game’s first eight minutes and scored all 16 Edison points. He went on to net 31 points and Foster scored 18 points.

“It was a great effort by our guys, especially coming off that tough loss a few days ago (against Fountain Valley),” Edison Coach Rich Boyce said of the Huntington win. “We played hard the whole way through and that effort was the key for us. Dreon was red-hot. He had a great game.”

Edison ends league play Thursday, hosting Los Alamitos at 7 p.m.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers stayed tied with Fountain Valley for third place in the Sunset League standings by staging a second-half rally to get past visiting Newport Harbor, 61-53. Huntington, which trailed, 32-20, at half, received 24 points from senior guard Rory Aldana on Senior Night. Junior forward Harley Ruder had 14 points and nine rebounds and junior forward Andrew Tenbrink had 11 points and six boards.

“The seniors played the entire first quarter and it was a great night for all of them,” Oilers Coach Fabian Luna said. “I just want to congratulate and thank all my senior players for what they have brought to our program.”

In Friday’s 56-47 home loss to Edison, Tenbrink led Huntington with 16 points. Ruder had 11 points and Aldana scored 10.

Huntington (14-12, 5-4) wraps up league play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Marina.

Fountain Valley: The Barons fell from a share of second place in the Sunset League on Tuesday after losing, 62-52, at Los Alamitos. The victory allowed the Griffins (9-1 league) to take the Sunset title. Junior guard Josh Armstrong paced Fountain Valley (16-8, 5-4) with 14 points and junior forward Tanner Trounce and senior forward Nathan Moss scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

“We played solid defense in the second and third quarters, but could not capitalize offensively,” Barons Coach Roger Holmes said. “We had a poor shooting night and that cost us against a good team.

The Barons were coming off a 77-43 home win Friday against Marina. Trounce connected on seven three-point shots and scored a game-high 28 points.

Fountain Valley previously had moved into a tie for second place in the league standings Feb. 1 by knocking off host Edison, 53-51. Moss blocked a shot in the closing seconds to preserve the win, which allowed the Barons to sweep the Chargers. Senior guard Sean Myers scored 13 points with seven assists, seven rebounds and four steals.

Fountain Valley ends league play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Marina: The Vikings trailed Edison early Tuesday and fell to the visiting Chargers, 66-52. Senior guard JJ James tied for game scoring honors with 21 points. Senior guard Jordon Adnams scored 12 points.

In a league game played last Friday, Marina fell, 77-43, at Fountain Valley. James posted 17 points to lead Marina.

The Vikings (9-16, 1-8) complete their league schedule at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Huntington Beach.

Girls’ Basketball

Brethren Christian: The Warriors on Tuesday were handed a 63-30 loss by visiting St. Margaret’s in an Academy League game at Ocean View High. Senior post Kate Jensen led BC (16-9, 4-5) with eight points and senior guard Emily Hammond and junior guard Diannia Demaziliere both scored six points.

In previous league play, BC lost to host Sage Hill, 32-29, on Feb. 2. Junior forward Brooke Hernandez led BC with 10 points and Hammond added nine points.

Edison: The Chargers came out with a vengeance Tuesday and defeated host Marina, 71-35, in Sunset League action. The win came five days after the Chargers suffered their first league defeat at the hands of Huntington Beach, which left both teams tied for the Sunset League lead. Rilee Horton scored a game-best 20 points. Three other Chargers — junior Karlie Samuelson (20 points), freshman Katie Lou Samuelson (14 points) and Monay Lee (13 points) — also had big scoring games.

Edison (20-3, 8-1) had lost out on sole possession for first place in league Feb. 2 after visiting Huntington rallied in the second half to pull out a 73-70 win. Four Chargers were in double figures scoring, with Karlie Samuelson leading the way with 18 points. Lee and Geena Gomez each scored 17 points and Horton had 14 points.

Edison finishes league play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Los Alamitos.

Fountain Valley: The Barons slipped to 3-5 in Sunset League play Monday after falling, 56-39, at Los Alamitos. Junior guard Jasmine Matar scored 12 points and sophomore forward Lora Bender added 10 points for Fountain Valley, which concludes league play at home Thursday at 7 p.m. against Newport Harbor.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers (20-4, 8-1) bolted to a 31-11 halftime lead on Newport Harbor and went on to rout the host Sailors, 55-28, on Tuesday.

Senior point guard Kelsey Minato led all scorers with 16 points, senior guard Maya went on to score 13 points and sophomore guard Paola Roa 11 points, as eight Oilers hit the scoring column.

Huntington moved into a share of the Sunset lead Feb. 2 by picking up a 73-70 win at Edison. The outcome left both teams tied for first heading into this week’s action. Minato had 31 points and Roa scored 21 for the Oilers.

“Both games against Edison were intense and exciting for fans to watch,” Huntington Coach Russ McClurg said. “Edison is well coached and was the team to beat in league. The girls played their hearts out and went for it. They left everything on the floor and represented their school, family and friends proudly.”

Huntington hosts Marina at 7 p.m. Thursday on Senior Night.

Marina: The Vikings were outplayed Tuesday by visiting Edison and lost to the Chargers, 71-35. Junior guard Lauren Dorame led Marina with 14 points. Starting sophomore guard Melissa Lindquist was hampered by an ankle sprain and saw limited playing time.

“Edison outplayed us all over the court,” Marina Coach Dean Katayama said. “Edison played with a purpose and made a big statement after their loss to Huntington.”

In league action last week, Marina won, 38-25, at Newport Harbor on Jan. 31 and two days later defeated host Fountain Valley, 51-47. In the win over Fountain Valley, Dorame had 19 points and eight rebounds and Lindquist tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, nine assists and three steals, despite playing the second half with a sprained ankle.

Marina closes out league play Thursday with a 7 p.m. game at Huntington Beach.

Ocean View: The Seahawks registered another Golden West League victory Tuesday by knocking off host Santa Ana, 37-29. Hannah Ferguson scored a game-high 16 points and Deja Duke had eight points, as Ocean View improved to 4-5 in league.

In previous league action Feb. 2, the Seahawks shut out Loara in the third quarter and went on to defeat the Saxons, 28-26. Ferguson again topped all scorers with 13 points.

Ocean View ends its regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday hosting Segerstrom.
