Edison: The Chargers competed at the Irvine Southern California Championships last week and finished in 21st place.

Edison posted wins over Cabrillo (16-1), Villa Park (10-0) and Irvine (14-6), and lost to Mira Costa (8-6) and Warren (8-6).

The tournament started Jan. 31 and ended Saturday.

“While we didn’t meet our goal, which was to finish top 16, I was pleased with how we played, especially on the defensive end,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “To hold teams to less than five goals a game in this tournament validates how hard we have been working to improve our defense.

“Josette [Santos] had a phenomenal tournament for us, and when she plays like she did, it really sets the tone for the rest of the team as well. In addition, both sophomore Lyndsie Williams and junior Natalie May had a strong defensive presence and led the team in steals.”

Sophomores Delaney Cleveland and Sabrina Jensen scored 12 and nine goals, respectively, in the tournament. Senior Melissa Balding also scored 12 goals.

“It’s nice seeing girls step and take the scoring pressures off of [Melissa] Balding and [Risa] Burke, and both Sabrina [Jensen] and Delaney [Cleveland] did just that.

In a Sunset League game played Jan. 30 at Newport Harbor High, Edison rolled past Fountain Valley, 18-1.

Cleveland, Jensen, Dana Kerins and Cassidy Marmion all scored three goals. Balding scored twice and Santos had eight saves.

Edison took on Huntington Beach in a Sunset League finale Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The CIF Southern Section girls’ water polo playoff brackets for each division will be announced Sunday. Playoff games start Tuesday.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers improved to 14-12 overall Friday by routing visiting El Dorado, 16-2, in nonleague play. The Oilers recognized Maya Jozefowiz-Wilde, Hana Lumbur and Sammy Preston during senior day festivities.

Marina: The Vikings received two goals from Danielle Shepard, but dropped an 18-4 Sunset League game Jan. 30 to host Newport Harbor.
