National Signing Day a busy one for locals

Several local prep athletes took the next step in their educational and athletic careers Wednesday by signing a National Letter of Intent.

Below is a list of some of the signings Wednesday submitted to the Independent by local schools:

Edison: Angelisa Cortez (women’s soccer, UC Santa Barbara); Bryce Campbell (football, Humboldt St.).

Huntington Beach: Nolan Biegel (football, Pennsylvania); Chris Ogilvie (football, Brown); Ramon Vargas (football, UC Davis); Noah Harrison (men’s water polo, Harvard); Max Schultz (men’s water polo, UC Santa Barbara); Lindsey Walter (field hockey, Columbia); Alexis D’Zmura (women’s soccer, University of the Pacific); Mike Marsh (men’s soccer, SOKA University of America); Shane Grace (baseball, Hawaii); Lou Payetta (baseball, Fresno State); Brett Urabe (baseball, UCLA).

Marina: Alex Waked (football, Holy Cross); Sandy Simmons (softball, LSU); Amanda Cordeiro (softball, Chico St.); Raquel Rosas (women’s volleyball, Air Force Academy); Natalie Kridel (women’s volleyball, Sacred Heart).

Mater Dei: Bret Bonanni (Huntington Beach, men’s water polo, Stanford); Corey Hammond (Huntington Beach, track and field, Columbia).

Girls’ Soccer

Ocean View continues to lead the Golden West League pack after winning, 2-1, Tuesday at Orange. Freshman forward Jade Kratovil and junior midfielder Danny Dapello scored goals and senior midfielder Aleanna Vargas assisted on both scores.

Seahawks Coach David Deaton called it a “tough game,” which came one day after his team defeated Segerstrom, 2-1.

“Our passing and movement was beautiful to watch,” he said of Tuesday’s game.

In Monday’s win at Segerstrom, senior midfielder Kelley Dooley and senior forward Melissa Cooley scored and Vargas and Dapello each had an assist. Freshman keeper Malia Hayes had nine saves.

In Sunset League games played Tuesday, two matches — Edison at Fountain Valley and Los Alamitos at Huntington Beach — ended in 1-1 ties. The third match saw Marina fall, 1-0, at Newport Harbor.

Alyssa Raphael scored off an assist from Kasey Reeve in the second half as Fountain Valley rallied to tie against Edison in a game that went to overtime.. Allison Marlow had 11 saves for the Barons, who are 1-5-1 in league. Edison is 4-1-2 in league.

Laura Bermel scored off a corner and goalie Justice Walker turned in 10 saves to help Huntington earn a tie against Los Alamitos. The Oilers are 2-3-2 in league.

Boys’ Soccer

Fountain Valley maintained its lead in the Sunset League race Friday by shutting down visiting Huntington Beach, 2-0. Striker Jose Garcia scored off a pass from Ethan Morrow and midfielder Garrett Stiffler-Greasby scored from 18 yards out for the Barons, who improved to 6-1 in league and 15-4-2 overall. Huntington fell to 1-6 in league.

The Barons posted their 13th shutout of the season and have allowed just four goals in seven league games.

Marina moved to 5-1-1 in Sunset League play Friday by edging host Los Alamitos, 1-0, in overtime. Alex Witkowski scored the game-winning goal and David Elias picked up four saves.

Mikey McClymonds had a goal and assist, Jacob Rushing scored once and Scott Campbell had seven saves for Edison on Friday in a 2-1 Sunset League win at Newport Harbor. The Chargers are 2-4-1 in league.

Girls’ Water Polo

Edison and Fountain Valley are competing at the Irvine Southern California Women’s Water Polo Championships, which starts Thursday at various pool sites in Orange County. The Chargers and Barons are in the Corona del Mar Pool bracket and will play their games at the CdM pool. The Chargers are the No. 2-seed behind Corona del Mar and open at 5 p.m. against No. 7-seed Cathedral Catholic of San Diego. The Barons, the No. 6-seed, open against No. 3-seed Murrieta Valley at 6 p.m.

The tournament continues through Saturday.

“The great thing about this tourney is that it is such high competition and every game requires the girls to be mentally prepared,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. This is exactly what we need as the postseason nears. Five games in three days tests the toughness of these girls.”

In a nonleague game Saturday, Edison, ranked eighth in CIF Division 1, got past San Clemente, the third-ranked team in Division 2, 9-8. Ashley Dorman scored her second goal of the match, which turned out to be the game-winner, on a lob shot with nine seconds to play

Edison’s Alys Williams led the scoring with four goals. Abby Oshiro, Melissa Balding and Jessica Becker all scored once and Sydni Estrella had five saves.

“We really wanted an opportunity to play San Clemente again after losing to them at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions two weeks ago,” said Riley, whose team fell, 10-9, to the Tritons on Jan. 13.
