Chargers get healthy, win

Having played most of the month without one of its key players, the Edison girls’ water polo team was at full-strength Wednesday for its Sunset League game against Huntington Beach.

With Abby Oshiro back in the lineup, the Chargers, ranked eighth in CIF Division 1, used a pressing defense to jump on the Oilers and eventually scored a 16-5 victory at the Newport Harbor High pool.

Edison bolted to an 8-0 first-quarter lead to improve to 2-1 in league and 10-8 overall.

Oshiro, who had been out with a dislocated knee cap and saw limited playing time in each period to “ease her back into the game,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said, scored the first time she touched the ball and ended up with two goals.

Haley Kunert led the Chargers in scoring with five goals. Oshiro was one of four Chargers to score twice, along with Melissa Balding, Jessica Becker and Alys Williams. Natalie May, Ashley Dorman and Risa Burke all scored once and Sydni Estrella registered 11 saves.

In another Sunset game Wednesday at the Newport Harbor pool, 10th-ranked Fountain Valley took down Marina, 15-3.

Sunset League action resumes Wednesday at the Newport Harbor pool. The key game in the tripleheader is the nightcap (7:10 p.m.) between Edison and third-ranked Newport Harbor. The schedule begins with Marina taking on second-ranked Los Alamitos at 5 p.m. and Fountain Valley and Huntington play in the following match (6 p.m.).

“It is a huge game for both teams and possibly second place in league is on the line,” Riley said of Edison’s showdown with the Sailors. “We still have a very tough Fountain Valley team the week after that, so we have our work cut out for us over the next three weeks. Throw in the Southern California Championships at Woolett (Center) Feb. 3 to 5 and you can see we have an intense month ahead of us.”
