The lead in the Sunset League girls' soccer race belongs to one team this week.
A week ago, Edison and Los Alamitos shared the league's top spot. After results from games played Jan. 17 and Monday, that lead now belongs only to Los Al. The Chargers (4-0-2 in league) trails the Griffins (5-0-1) by a half-game in the league standings.
Edison, ranked seventh in CIF Southern Section Division 1, fell from a tie for the top spot on Jan. 17 after playing Huntington Beach to a 1-1 tie. On Monday, the Chargers picked up a 2-1 victory over Newport Harbor, getting two scores in the second half from Mackenzie Cerda.
In other Sunset League action Monday, Los Alamitos, tied for the No. 10 spot in Division 1, downed Marina, 3-1, and Huntington (8-4-3, 2-2-2 in league) shut out Fountain Valley, 2-0. Carolyn Archer and Dottie Rhoten scored goals for the Oilers in their win over the Barons. Bri Mojica scored for the Vikings in their loss to Los Al.
Lindsey Archer scored for Huntington in its 1-1 tie at Edison Jan. 17.
The Sunset lead again will be on the line Tuesday when Los Alamitos goes to Edison for a 5 p.m. showdown. Also that day, Huntington plays host to Marina at 5 p.m. and Fountain Valley travels for a 4:45 p.m. game at Newport Harbor.
Ocean View: The Seahawks, ranked 10th in Division 6, suffered a 3-1 loss Tuesday to Loara in Golden West League play.
Dani Dapello scored and Emma Malsy had five saves for Ocean View which slipped to 1-2-1 in league and 6-7-1 overall. Dapello, Jade Kratovil and Sam Romo each had a goal and assist, Christina Smith scored and Casey Dooley had an assist, in Ocean View's 4-1 win Jan. 17 over Orange.
Edison: The Chargers moved into a second-place tie in the Sunset League standings with Fountain Valley after knocking off host Huntington Beach Friday, 4-2.
Devin Anderson, Connor Gordan, Adam Muñoz and Garen Balikcioglu scored goals in the opening 30 minutes of the game for Edison, which moved to 3-2-1 in league and 11-6-3 overall. Muñoz and Balikcioglu each also had an assist.
"We had a slow start to the first half of league," Edison Coach Charlie Breneman said. "With winning the last three games, we are in a bit of a groove. Hopefully we can continue our good form and finish out league on top."
The Chargers play host to Newport Harbor at 5 p.m. Friday and travel Wednesday to face Los Alamitos.
Fountain Valley: The Barons and Marina were deadlocked at 1-1 through regulation play Friday in their Sunset League battle, and neither team could score in two 10-minute overtime sessions, leaving the score in a tie.
Larry Turner scored for Fountain Valley, which is 3-2-1 in league. and Ryan Brown had four saves in the first half, but injured his elbow and didn't play in the second half, Joey Loranger took over in goal and also had four saves with one goal scored against.
Fountain Valley plays a 5 p.m. league game Friday at Huntington Beach. The Barons play host to Newport Harbor at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Huntington Beach: The Oilers couldn't overcome a 4-0 deficit Friday against visiting Edison and fell, 4-2, to the Chargers.
