Girls’ Basketball Roundup: Edison leads tight league title race

Edison, Fountain Valley and Los Alamitos collected wins Monday as the Sunset League girls’ basketball race moved into the second round of play.

Edison went to 6-0 in league play and continues to lead the league title chase after disposing of host Newport Harbor, 45-11. The Chargers (15-5 overall) shut out the Sailors in the first and third quarters and allowed only three points in the first half. Dolores Gomez led the scoring with nine points.

Huntington, ranked No. 12 in CIF Southern Section Division 1-A, scored a 56-35 win over Fountain Valley. Paola Roa scored 23 points and Stephanie Louie had 12 points for the Oilers (14-5, 4-2 in league), who jumped out to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter.

Marina was outscored by 22 points in the second half at Los Alamitos and suffered a 70-44 loss to the Griffins (5-1 in league). Madison Yutkins scored 12 points to lead the Vikings (11-11, 2-4).

In Sunset League play Jan. 17, Edison edged Huntington, 51-47, and Marina won, 48-43, against Fountain Valley.

Geena Gomez had a game-high 18 points for the Chargers, who outscored Huntington, 11-4, in the fourth quarter to get the win. For the Oilers, Louie and Roa scored 15 and 14 points, respectively.

“It was a really tough battle and great game,” Huntington Coach Russ McClurg said.

Yutkins led all scorers with 14 points and Lauren Dorame, who made four free throws in the closing seconds to secure the win, finished with 13 points in Marina’s win over Fountain Valley. Melissa Lindquist had six points and eight steals and Natasha Mangham and Danielle Brown had 14 and 10 rebounds, respectively for the Vikings.

Kelcie Mayott scored 10 points and Ari Jacobsen had eight points for the Barons (9-12, 1-4).

“I am really proud of the way the team stayed focused, confident, and really worked together to pull out this important win,” Marina Coach Carol Osbrink said.

Sunset League action resumes at 7 p.m. Tuesday with Edison playing at home against Los Alamitos in a key game, Marina goes to Huntington, and Fountain Valley is at Newport Harbor.

Fountain Valley also is the site for the Fountain Valley Fire vs. Fountain Valley Police game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Brethren Christian: The Warriors earned their second win of the season Saturday by defeating Desert Christian Academy, 40-31, in the Small School Showcase at Liberty Christian High in Huntington Beach. Senior Annie Huie scored a game-high 27 points and also played “stellar defense” in the win, BC Coach Jeff Wallace said.

In an Academy League game Friday, the Warriors (2-1, 0-5) were upended by St. Margaret’s, 46-16.

“I am pleased with the determination the girls brought to the floor on Saturday following the adversity from our game on Friday,” Wallace said. “They brought a great sense of resolve to the floor propelling them to the win against a team that we matched up well against. More than the victory, it was another good character building block for the team as they continue to grow.”

BC concludes the first round of league play at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Sage Hill at Ocean View High.
