In a showdown at Laurel School in Los Alamitos, unranked Edison rallied in the second half to record a 2-1 win over Los Alamitos, the top-ranked team in CIF Division 1. Chargers Coach Kerry Crooks said it was Edison’s first win over the Griffins in four years.

Los Alamitos (3-1) struck first with a goal at the 58th-minute mark. Edison (3-1) came back and tied the score eight minutes later on a goal by sophomore Karly Freeman, off an assist by Becca Ross. The Chargers scored the game-winner six minutes later when Angelisa Cortez dribbled through the Los Alamitos defense and slipped the ball in the far post for the score.

Mitchell Alvarez scored on a penalty kick in the 1-0 win over Huntington and he and Tyler Smith each scored twice in Friday’s win over Newport Harbor.

In two other Sunset games played Friday, Huntington edged Fountain Valley, 2-1, and Marina won, 1-0, over Los Alamitos.

Fountain Valley (0-4) took a 1-0 halftime lead on host Huntington on the strength of a goal by Steven Ryan, but Sam Hart scored twice in the second half to lift the Oilers, who picked up their first league win after suffering three straight one-goal games in league play.

Marina moved to 3-1 and delivered visiting Los Alamitos (3-1) its first league loss after its 1-0 victory. Miguel Rizo scored for the Vikings and David Elias had five saves.

Edison, which has been playing without starter Abby Oshiro (dislocated knee cap), traveled last weekend to Santa Barbara to compete at the prestigious Tournament of Champions. The two-day event, played at both Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos, had 16 squads from Southern California vying for the title eventually won by No. 1-ranked Dos Pueblos.

The Chargers opened the tournament Friday and lost to sixth-ranked Laguna Beach (12-7) and beat Vista (12-9), which is the reigning CIF San Diego Section Division 1 champion. They also lost to seventh-ranked Foothill (10-7) in a game the Chargers led, 7-6, with 2:24 to play. In their final tournament game, Coach Diggy Riley gave his bench “significant playing time” during an 18-9 loss to Agoura, the top-ranked team in CIF Division 2.

“I was really happy with the girls this past weekend at the tournament in Santa Barbara,” Riley said. “We had Foothill on the ropes until the final two minutes and really shut down Vista’s high-powered offense by going up, 8-1, at half. Williams, Kunert, Becker and Balding all had a great tournament, as did our goalie Estrella.”
