Saints capture PAL tournament title

The St. Bonaventure Saints of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Huntington Beach captured the Parochial Athletic League (PAL) Tournament at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana on Sunday. The Saints defeated St. Jeanne of Tustin, 38-37, in the final. They previously defeated Saints Simon & Jude of Huntington Beach in December to win the tournament title of the St. Anne’s Tip Off Classic at JSerra High. The team also finished third at the Vince Lombardo Memorial Basketball Tournament at Servite High in December.

Contributing to the Saints’ PAL tournament title run were: Luke Williams, Ryan Burke, Noah Utley, Cade Pinker-Bernard, John Keegan, Michael Shloub, Colin Naughton and Nicholas Foucrier, Chris Rodrigues, Christian La Bow, Luke Selcho and Joe Mastroni.

Locals finish second, third at NSSA event

Two Huntington Beach surfers, Tony Bartovich and Nathan Thompson, finished in second and third, respectively, at the National Scholastic Surfing Assn.’s eighth event of he Open Season. The contest was held Jan. 7-8 at Salt Creek in Dana Point. Dane Petersen of Trabuco Canyon won the event.

Surfside wrestlers earn top placements

Huntington Beach’s Surfside USA wrestling club sent eight wrestlers to a Southern California Wrestling Assn. for Youth (SCWAY) tournament Sunday at Canyon High in Anaheim. All eight wrestlers placed in the top three of their respective weight classes. Michael McCoy earned a first-place medal, Jake McLaughlin, Joey McLaughlin, John McCoy, Peter McCoy and Cesar Villagrana each took second place and Cade Haakenson and Mikey Folch both took third.

Edison golf tournament is Feb. 13

The Center for International Business and Communication Studies (CIBACS) program at Edison High is holding a benefit golf tournament Feb. 13 at Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach. Registration is still open for the event. The cost of $195 includes a round of golf, lunch and dinner. The tournament includes hole-in-one, longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contests.
