Edison improved to 2-1-1 in league and 11-5-2 overall. Marina dropped to 2-2 in league.

“I felt we played a little hesitant first half but established tenacity in the first 10 minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach,” Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said. “We are anticipating a battle on Thursday against Los Alamitos and the girls are excited for the competition.”

Los Alamitos (3-0-1) leads the Sunset League race after posting a 3-1 win Tuesday over host Fountain Valley. Addie Espinoza scored off a corner kick from Sofia Rucker in the first half for the Barons, who are 0-4 in league.

In another Sunset game Tuesday, Huntington Beach dropped a 2-0 overtime decision to visiting Newport Harbor.

Ocean View Coach David Deaton called the Seahawks’ 1-0 win over Golden West League foe Loara a “nailbiter.” Senior midfielder Kelley Dooley scored early in the game and freshman goalie Malia Hayes recorded 15 saves against a Loara team that Deaton said uses a “kick ball style” of play.

“I think this was the first time my girls did not give up,” Deaton said. “They fought hard to keep Loara out of our net.”

In previous action, the Seahawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Orange and defeated the Panthers, 3-1, in a Jan. 12 league game. Freshman forward Jade Kratovil scored twice and senior midfielder Aleanna Vargas scored once. Senior forward Melissa Cooley had two assists and Hayes had seven saves.

Ocean View is 13-3-1 and 3-0 in league.

The Sunset League tripleheader Jan. 11 saw Edison, Newport Harbor and Los Alamitos pick up big victories.

Edison was a 21-2 winner over Marina. Alys Williams led all scorers with five goals and Abby Oshiro scored four goals. Every Charger got into the scoring act and goalie Sydni Estrella had six saves.

The Chargers, ranked eighth in CIF Division 1, opened the tournament with a 12-5 loss Friday to Corona del Mar, which went on to win the title. The Chargers also were edged Friday by San Clemente, 10-9, but came back Saturday to defeat Agoura, 8-7, and Montebello, 8-5.

“Our girls really united this past weekend and we saw what we can do as a true team when this happens,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “Our defense was outstanding for most of the tournament and we saw signs of our offense coming to life, as well. We looked at several recent games and made some adjustments on both ends of the pool and it really made a difference. Our coaching staff really loved the way the girls bonded together the entire weekend.”
