Seahawks blow past Oilers

The first quarter of Monday’s nonleague boys’ basketball game between Ocean View and Huntington Beach gave every indication that a fierce battle would ensue. The teams traded early punches, one taking the lead before the other regained it. A back-and-forth battle seemed imminent.

But the game switched gears in the second quarter and by halftime, there was little doubt as to which team would emerge victorious.

Ocean View turned a second-quarter blitz into an insurmountable lead and the visiting Seahawks went from a four-point lead after one quarter to a 31-point lead at the half and an eventual 82-68 win.

Ocean View, which won its ninth straight game, scored 38 second-quarter points to overwhelm the Oilers. The Seahawks, ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division 2AA and 15-3 overall, led at the half, 56-25.

“Our defense turned into offense in that first half, and it was beautiful,” Ocean View co-Coach Jimmy Harris said. “The energy we get from our defense really drives our offense. But for how well we played in the first half, we really didn’t do much in the second half. That was frustrating.”

Ocean View and Huntington Beach have played annually on Martin Luther King Day for the past five years. Monday’s win by the Seahawks gave them a 3-2 lead in the MLK Day series.

“We love to win this game,” Harris said. “It’s an in-city rivalry, the kids know each other and the fans know each other, too. It’s a great community game and (Huntington Beach Coach) Fabian (Luna) is awesome and does such a great job with his program.”

Ocean View’s 7-foot center Conor Clifford scored 18 of his team-high 23 points in the opening half. He also had 13 rebounds.

Huntington Beach’s Blake Skorich hit six three-point shots and led all scorers with 25 points.

Huntington closes out the first half of Sunset League play at 7 p.m. Friday with a home game against Marina. Ocean View also ends first half play in the Golden West League play Friday with a 7 p.m. home game against Segerstrom.

In other boys’ basketball action:

Brethren Christian: The Warriors won two games in the past week. On Saturday, they defeated Vistamar of El Segundo, 68-40, in the Small Schools Showcase. Junior center Mamadou Ndiaye had 21 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.

BC previously defeated Sage Hill, 94-72, in Academy League play Friday. Junior Dakota Warren had a game-high 27 points. Ndiaye contributed 26 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Warriors, who are 4-0 in league and 16-5 overall, play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Margaret’s.

Edison: The Chargers stepped away from Sunset League play last Saturday and took on Redondo Union at the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase at Villa Park High. The Chargers lost to the Seahawks, 59-49. Senior guard Corey Foster scored a game-high 24 points for Edison.

In two Sunset League games last week, Edison fell, 59-53, at Fountain Valley on Jan. 11 and edged past visiting Huntington Beach, 40-38, on Friday.

The Chargers, who entered the week 2-1 in league and 15-4 overall, take to the road Friday to face league-leading Los Alamitos at 7 p.m.

Fountain Valley: The Barons improved to 13-5 and 2-1 in the Sunset League in the past week by defeating Edison, 59-53, and Marina, 57-48.

Fountain Valley scored 21 points and held Edison to just seven in the fourth quarter of a Jan. 11 league game to rally from an eight-point deficit.

Second-year Coach Roger Holmes said it was the first time Fountain Valley had defeated Edison in seven years.

“We just kept chipping away at it,” Holmes said of the game-long deficit. “Obviously, they (Edison) have two really good players (Dreon Barlett, Corey Foster) and they came out real hot to take that big lead early. But we hung in there. We made some key stops in the fourth quarter and I think our depth helped us out a lot. We did a great job of rebounding, too.”

Josh Armstrong hit four three-point shots en route to a game-best 20 points for the Barons.

Fountain Valley came back Friday to defeat host Marina, 57-48. Nathan Moss scored a game-high 18 points and collected 11 rebounds and Sean Meyers scored 15 points for the Barons.

Fountain Valley closes out the first round of league play at 7 p.m. Friday against visiting Newport Harbor.

Marina: The Vikings played Fountain Valley tough Friday but fell to the Barons, 57-48. Senior guard JJ James scored 13 points for the Vikings, who are 1-2 in league and 9-9 overall.

Girls’ Basketball

Brethren Christian: The Warriors routed Calvary Chapel of Downey, 62-14, at the Small Schools Showcase on Saturday. BC outscored the Grizzlies, 42-2, in the second half. Every Warrior scored in the game, led by junior guard Sara Hodges’ 14 points.

In an Academy League game Friday, BC pulled away from Sage Hill in the fourth quarter and went on to score a 41-29 victory. Junior forward Brooke Hernandez scored 14 points and senior guard Emily Hammond had 13 points.

“We continue to have a balanced effort from the entire roster,” said BC Coach Jeff Wallace, whose team improved to 3-1 in league and 15-5 overall. “This helps us tremendously against any opponent who looks to focus on just one girl. The other girls step up to fill what is attempted to be taken away.”

The Warriors play a 6 p.m. league game Friday at St. Margaret’s.

Edison: The Chargers ran their league-leading Sunset League record to 4-0 Tuesday by defeating visiting Marina, 63-31. Katie Lou Samuelson scored a game-high 26 points and Lauren Grego scored 11 points.

Edison hosts Los Alamitos at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Fountain Valley: The Barons won its second straight Sunset League game and improved to 2-2 in league Tuesday after outscoring visiting Los Alamitos, 16-10, in the fourth quarter to earn a 48-43 victory. Junior guard Jasmine Matar and sophomore forward Lora Bender scored 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers nailed 14 three-point shots Tuesday and routed visiting Newport Harbor, 63-23. Senior point guard Kelsey Minato scored a game-high 16 points and sophomore guard Paola Roa and senior guard Maya Kennedy each had 11 points.

The 14 three-pointers were one shy of tying the school record for a game. That record was set Saturday during a 78-40 romp past Kennedy. Roa had 16 points and Kennedy and Minato both scored 14 in the easy victory.

Huntington, 3-1 in league and 14-4 overall, travels Thursday for a 6 p.m. game at Marina.

Marina: The Vikings went to Edison on Tuesday for a Sunset League game and fell to the Chargers, 63-31. Junior guard Lauren Dorame scored six points for Marina.

In previous action, Marina went 2-1 last week. The Vikings defeated Los Amigos, 55-48, in nonleague play on Jan. 9 and got their first league win, 45-23, against Newport Harbor. Their loss was a 45-27 setback on Jan. 12 to Fountain Valley.

Marina, 1-3 in league, hosts Huntington Beach at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Ocean View: The Seahawks held off Loara on Tuesday to register a 36-31 Golden West League victory over the visiting Saxons. Senior point guard Hannah Ferguson scored a game-high 18 points.

Ocean View, 2-1 in league, hosts Santa Ana at 7 p.m. Thursday.
