The Chargers have been playing without starter Abby Oshiro (dislocated knee cap) since the start of the Holiday Cup Dec. 30. Edison Coach Diggy Riley said that Oshiro should be back in the lineup by the Newport Harbor game Feb. 2.

“After a disappointing loss to Los Al, our girls regrouped and had terrific games against two top 18-ranked teams,” Riley said. “Our girls felt like they had something to prove after the loss to Los Al and really turned up the intensity, especially on the defensive end.”

Edison opens play Friday at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. The Chargers play fifth-ranked Laguna Beach at 2:30 p.m. at Santa Barbara High.

The tournament runs through Saturday and is played at both the Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos High pools. The 16-team event, which divides four teams into four pool-play brackets, features several ranked Southern Section teams, including Edison, Laguna Beach, Los Alamitos, Newport Harbor, Dos Pueblos (No. 1, Division 1), Corona del Mar (No. 4, Division 1), Santa Barbara (No. 6, Division 1), Agoura (No. 1, Division 2), Montebello (No. 2, Division 2), Long Beach Wilson (No. 7, Division 2) and Mater Dei (No. 8, Division 2).

“Our girls are really looking forward to this tournament,” Riley said. “We get the opportunity to travel together and turn it into a sort of bonding weekend. Every game is going to be tough.”
