The Sunset League season stated Jan. 5 and Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos and Newport Harbor all posted opening victories at Newport Harbor High.

Huntington Beach cruised past Marina, beating the Vikings, 15-2. Juniors Hana Lambur and Samantha Preston played “stellar games,” Oilers Coach Brian Anderson said. Lambur was four for five in shooting and Preston five for 10 and drew five exclusions.

The Oilers also edged host Dana Hills, 10-9, in a nonleague game Friday. Sabrina Nguyen led Huntington (17-4 entering the week) in scoring with three goals and Lambur and Preston both scored twice.

Edison fell behind early against Los Alamitos and couldn’t recover, dropping a 14-7 game to the Griffins. Alys Williams scored five goals and Abby Oshiro scored twice for the Chargers, who trailed, 7-1, after the opening quarter.

The Chargers rebounded Saturday at the William Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine to crush host Irvine, 15-2, in nonleague action. They led, 4-0, at the half and outscored the Vaqueros, 7-0, in the third quarter, to pull away. Williams scored five goals, Melissa Balding three goals and Oshiro two goals. Sydni Estrella had 10 saves.

“Our girls knew they did not play a very good defensive game against Los Al,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “We are a much better team than that and it showed in the second half. Our game against Irvine was an opportunity for us to reset the tone of solid defense and we did, shutting them out for three quarters.”

Edison travels up north Friday to play at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. The Chargers open against Corona del Mar in a 1:30 p.m. pool play game. The tournament runs through Saturday.

“We are excited about this weekend,” Riley said. “Any time you get to travel and spend time together as a team away from home is always nice. We have a huge opportunity in front of us and I know our girls will be ready”

Fountain Valley lost to Newport Harbor, 20-5.
