Katin surf contest opens Friday

The Katin Pro/Am Team Challenge will run for two days starting Friday at the north side of the Huntington Beach Pier. The event will combine elements of team and traditional surfing competition formats and champions will be decided in team and individual divisions.

Past winners at the contest, which began in the 1960s, include World Champions Shaun Tomson, Tom Curren, Martin Potter, Sunny Garcia and Kelly Slater.

Robinson named MVP of league

Ocean View senior quarterback/linebacker Timmy Robinson has been named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 All-Golden West League Football Team. Seahawks senior center/defensive tackle Ben Sumner was named the league’s Lineman of the Year.

Named to the first team for Ocean View were senior running back Travis Sparks, senior lineman Eric Hernandez, sophomore lineman Evan Perzanowski, junior defensive lineman Speiser Alani, senior defensive back Colton Johnson and junior kicker Christian Negrete.

Second team selections were senior receiver Elijah Nolasco-Blas, senior offensive lineman Carlos Islas and junior defensive lineman Rey Soria.

Warriors place 15 on all-league roster

Brethren Christian placed 15 players on the 2011 All-Academy League Football Team, with sophomore Will Martin leading the way as the league’s Co-Lineman of the Year along with junior Alex Waller of St. Margaret’s.

The Warriors were represented on the first team by seniors Sam Franklin, Brandon White, Jon Vazquez, Larry Wade and Billy Bryson, junior Jake Roque and Martin and fellow sophomore Anthony Moore.

Making the second team from BC were seniors Cameron Smith, Bryant Freese, Nick Rommerdahl and Daniel Lee, juniors Luke Carbonella and Stephen Keenan and sophomore Jack McInally.
