High School Roundup: Vikings, Seahawks, Barons battle in Marina soccer tourney

The 26th annual Marina Holiday Classic boys’ soccer tournament came to a close Saturday with the tournament finale at Marina High. St. John Bosco emerged as tournament champion by winning, 5-4, on penalty kicks against Redondo Union.

The three-day tournament started Dec. 27 and 18 teams contended for the title.

Saturday’s final nearly had a local flavor to it but both Ocean View and Fountain Valley had their championship aspirations end Friday in semifinal losses. The Seahawks (4-5-3) and Redondo Union played to a 1-1 tie through regulation, but Redondo Union won on penalty kicks, 3-1, to move on to the final. The Barons (4-4-3), who were attempting to reach the tournament final for the second straight year, were upended, 2-0, by St. John Bosco.

Fountain Valley defeated Ocean View on penalty kicks (4-3) to win the third-place game Saturday. The Barons went 3-1-1 at the tournament. The Seahawks were 2-0-2.

Marina and Huntington Beach also competed for the crown. On the first day of the tournament Dec. 27, Marina was edged, 2-1, by Redondo Union, and fell, 2-0, to Garey of Pomona. Huntington and Ocean View played to a 1-1 tie and the Oilers also were clipped, 1-0, by Lakewood.

On Friday, Marina split two matches, beating Mayfair, 2-0, but fell to Aliso Niguel, 2-0, in consolation bracket play. The Vikings finished the tournament with a 1-2-1 record. Aliso Niguel also defeated Huntington, 4-3. The Oilers went 1-2 at the tournament.

The Sunset League boys’ soccer race, which began Wednesday, continues Friday with three games: Huntington travels for a 3 p.m. game at Fountain Valley, Marina (8-2-3) takes on Los Alamitos at 3 p.m. at Laurel Jr. High in Los Alamitos, and Edison plays at 5 p.m. at Newport Harbor.

On Wednesday , the Sunset schedule has Edison playing host to Los Alamitos at 3 p.m., Marina playing at 5 p.m. at Huntington, and Fountain Valley playing at 5 p.m. at Newport Harbor.

Ocean View starts its Golden West League campaign Friday, when it plays host to Santa Ana at 3 p.m. On Wednesday, the Seahawks play a 3 p.m. league match at Segerstrom.

“We had some great competition and exciting games all week,” Marina Coach Jeff Schofield said. “The fact that two out-of-county teams, Redondo Union and St. John Bosco, went to the final shows the strength of the tournament that included five Sunset League teams.”

Six local players made the all-tournament team. Marina was represented by senior Dakoda Muta, Fountain Valley by seniors Garret Stifler-Greasby and Kenji Louer, and Ocean View by seniors Carlos Valencia, Jairo Pineda and Eduardo Ramirez.

In the junior varsity tournament, Huntington won the championship, Marina was second and Ocean View in third place.

Girls’ Soccer

Edison reached the championship game of the Excalibur Tournament Saturday, but the Chargers fell shy of taking the crown when they were edged, 1-0, to Capistrano Valley in the tournament final at Yorba Linda High.

The Chargers (8-3-1) outscored four tournament opponents, 10-3. They defeated Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (3-1), Cathedral Catholic of San Diego (2-1), Westview of San Diego (3-0), and Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland (2-0), to advance to the title game.

Fountain Valley finished play Friday at the North Orange County Classic at La Mirada High. The Barons played twice, losing, 3-2, to San Luis Obispo, and 1-0 to host La Mirada. Madison Gomez and Addie Espinoza scored in the loss to San Luis Obispo.

The Barons began the tournament Dec. 27 and scored a 1-0 win over Pacifica. Dakota Griggs scored off a pass from Gomez in the second half. In their next outing, the Barons were blanked, 2-0, by Corona del Mar in the white division.

South Torrance won the NOOC title Saturday by defeating Corona del Mar, 1-0.

Girls’ Water Polo

Edison finished 11th and Huntington Beach was 12th at the Newport Harbor-Corona del Mar Holiday Cup, which ended Saturday .

The Sunset League rivals met in the tournament’s 11th-place game Saturday, when Edison scored an 11-6 victory over Huntington. The Chargers played the tournament without key player Delaney Cleveland.

Following a 12-2 loss to Laguna Beach in its opener, Edison rebounded to defeat Coronado, 11-9. Melissa Balding led the scoring with six goals and Risa Burke and Sabrina Jensen, who scored in the loss to Laguna Beach, and Dana Kerins, all scored once. Josette Santos had 12 saves.

In their next game, the Chargers fell in overtime, 6-5, to Palos Verdes, the No. 2 team in CIF Southern Section Division 2. Balding scored twice and Burke, Bree Marmion and Lyndsie Williams each scored once. Santos had 15 saves.

In the 11th-place game Saturday, Balding and Burke both scored three goals, Williams and Julie Harrison both scored twice, Natalie May had a goal and Santos finished with 11 saves.

“I thought the girls had a great weekend, especially being short-handed,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “Offensively, we came to life in several games, led by Melissa [Balding] and Risa [Burke]. We also had strong play by at both ends by Lyndsie [Williams] and Julie [Harrison].

“Josette [Santos] had an incredible weekend, making stop after stop and really establishing herself as one of the premier goalies in the county.”

Prior to taking on Edison, Huntington (7-7) dropped its opener to Santa Margarita, 13-6, routed Poway, 16-1, and lost to another Sunset rival, Newport Harbor, 9-4. Samantha Preston scored 10 goals and Sabrina Nguyen played “good defense,” Oilers Coach Brian Anderson said, during the tournament.

The Sunset League girls’ water polo season started Wednesday. Scores from opening games weren’t available at press time. The league schedule begins Jan. 9 at Newport Harbor High, where Marina squares off against Huntington at 5 p.m., Edison battles Los Alamitos at 6:05 p.m., and Fountain Valley plays against Newport Harbor at 7:10 p.m.

Ocean View begins its Golden West League season at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Santa Ana.
