When Misty May-Treanor was asked all for that she had to be thankful, the three-time Olympic gold medalist said she is grateful to be starting a family.

May-Treanor, the beach volleyball legend, said she is about three months pregnant with her first child during an interview with the Daily Pilot Sunday night at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort. She was there as the special guest/mistress of ceremonies for the 13th annual Sand Sculpture Dedication and Tree Lighting Ceremony.

She attended with her husband, Matt Treanor, a pro baseball catcher, and her father, Butch.

May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor High standout who grew up in Costa Mesa and now lives in Long Beach, retired from beach volleyball after winning her third gold medal with Kerri Walsh Jennings in London. May-Treanor had always wanted a family since marrying nine years ago.

After accomplishing all that she wanted in volleyball, she has wanted to pursue a career in coaching. But she feels that could be on hold because of her firstborn child.

“This has given me a new perspective,” said May-Treanor, 36, who is a volunteer coach of the USC women’s sand volleyball team. “It just puts everything in a new light.”

Matt Treanor, 37, said he is wanting to play baseball and will pursue his goal as a free agent.

“This is very exciting for us, for sure,” Matt Treanor said Sunday night. “This is an amazing blessing.”

The couple said they were waiting for the right time to start a family as they sometimes have had conflicting schedules. But they said the time was right, now.
