Baseball camp opens Tuesday

The Youth Baseball Camp for incoming freshmen at Laguna Beach High opens Tuesday at Skipper Carrillo Field on campus.

The camp instruction will take place daily from 5 to 7 p.m. through July 30.

USA poloists win at Pan Am Games

The USA Water Polo Women’s Senior National Team, which includes Makenzie Fischer of Laguna Beach, won its first two games at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

Team USA opened group pool play Tuesday and romped past Mexico, 25-3. Fischer scored once and was one of 11 U.S. players in the scoring column. Maggie Steffens (Danville/Stanford) led with four goals.

In its second pool play game, Team USA routed Cuba Wednesday, 18-3. Fischer and Steffens tied for game scoring honors with three goals each.

Fischer is one of 13 players on the Team USA roster. The USA Women complete pool play Saturday against Argentina.

In the Pan American Games Men’s tournament, Team USA rolled in its opener Tuesday in Toronto by easily disposing of Ecuador, 27-0. Bret Bonanni (Mater Dei/Stanford) of Huntington Beach burned the nets for nine goals.

The Men’s tournament runs through Sunday.

The VIC set for August in Laguna

Some of the top riders both locally and across the globe will be in Laguna Beach this summer for the 2015 World Championships of Skimboarding. The 39th edition of The VIC will take place Aug. 29-30 at Aliso Beach.

Past competitions have drawn riders from such countries as Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, The Philippines, Chile and Spain. The VIC is the longest-running contest in skimboarding.

U.S. Open of Surfing dates set

The 2015 Vans U.S. Open of Surfing is July 25-Aug. 2 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The top surfers in the world will compete for one of the sport’s largest prize purses in the world’s largest surf competition. The event also includes a lifestyle festival atmosphere that runs the duration of the Open.
