Tie drops Breakers in latest CIF poll

The Laguna Beach High football slipped a few spots in this week’s CIF Southern Section Southern Division poll after playing University to a 36-36 tie Sept. 7. The Breakers are now ranked seventh after spending two weeks in the No. 4 slot.

The football team is one of four Laguna teams to be ranked this week. The boys’ water polo team again comes in at No. 4 in Division 2 and the girls’ cross-country team is eighth in the Division 4 poll. The Laguna girls’ volleyball team was ranked No. 1 in the preseason Division 1-A poll, which was not updated this week.

Pavlik, Kropp to compete at Surf City

Whitney Pavlik of Laguna Beach and Jenny Kropp will vie for the women’s title when the seventh and final event of the 2012 Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, the National Championships, hit the Huntington Beach Pier from Sept. 21-23.

Tournament qualifiers are Sept. 21 and the tournament’s main draw is Sept. 22. Both the women’s and men’s semifinals and finals are Sept. 23.

Pavlik and Kropp are coming off the women’s division title of the Manhattan Beach Open on Aug. 26 and have won five of the first six series tournaments.

Running event set for November

Registration is open to Laguna Beach residents for the 35th annual Dana Point Turkey Trot. The Nov. 22 event includes a 5K, 10K, Kids’ Gobble Wobble, a two-day health and fitness expo and finish line festival.
