Swim teams cruise in wins

The Laguna Beach girls’ and boys’ swimming teams hosted Orange Coast League foes Saddleback and Calvary Chapel in a tri-meet March 25. The boys’ and girls’ varsity teams defeated the Roadrunners and Eagles, the girls by scores of 116-24 and 109-10, the boys by finals of 130-28 and 120, 21, respectively.

In the girls’ competition, the Breakers won every event against Saddleback and all but one (100 breaststroke) against Calvary Chapel. Turning in top times and wins for Laguna was Yoshi Andersen ( 50 freestyle, 26.43 seconds), Lila Vera (100 fly, 58.3, and 100 back, 1:00.49), Jenna Knott (100 breast vs. Saddleback, 1:21.8) and Paige Watroba was second in the 100 butterfly (1:07.53) and hit a new CIF consideration time.

Laguna’s boys were just as successful, winning all but the 100 breaststroke against Saddleback. The Breakers went up against a Calvary Chapel team that had just five varsity swimmers.

Key victories for the Breakers came from Nolan McConnell (200 free, 1:54.12), Billy Wild (200 individual medley, 2:05.61, and 100 free, 51.87) and Samer Alkateb (500 free, 5:23.66). Erik Henrikson was second (1:10.86) in the 100 breaststroke.

The Breakers are scheduled to compete Saturday at the Mission Viejo Invitational.

Boys’ Golf

The Breakers split two matches this week. On Monday, Tim Peterson took medalist honors (37) in a 208-271 victory over Westminster at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach. On Tuesday, the Breakers fell, 195-217, to Aliso Niguel at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Laguna’s next match is April 11 against Ocean View at Miles Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers began defense of their Orange Coast League title this week with a pair of sweeps.

On Tuesday, Laguna scored a 25-14, 25-21, 25-17 road victory over winless Estancia (0-14). Robbie McKnight had 10 kills, Max McCarter nine kills, Alek Burk 11 digs and Jack Winn 20 assists.

The Breakers took on visiting Saddleback on Wednesday and posted a 25-14, 25-12, 25-12 win over the Roadrunners for their ninth win of the season. McKnight had 21 kills, Winn 24 assists, Troy Donenfeld 11 digs and Alex Bekken 11 assists.

Laguna hosts league foes Estancia (Tuesday) and Calvary Chapel (Thursday) next week. Both matches start at 5:30 p.m.

Track and Field

The Laguna boys’ team ran its Orange Coast League record to 3-0 Tuesday by defeating visiting Saddleback, 70-57.

The Laguna girls’ team also went to 3-0 in league competition by winning, 84-44, over the Roadrunners.

The Breakers next will compete April 9 at the Arcadia Invitational.
