Breakers return to form in league
In two Orange Coast League games, the Laguna Beach girls’ water polo team hasn’t been tested. The Breakers got their second league victory Wednesday when they overpowered visiting Estancia, 24-1. They ran out to a 13-1 lead after one quarter and then shutout the Eagles the rest of the way.
Seven Breakers scored, led by six goals from Mackenzie Fischer and five apiece from Melena Masson and Sydney Saxe.
The Breakers have outscored their first two league opponents, 49-5.
Laguna last week went to Santa Barbara to face Dos Pueblos in a nonleague game Jan. 12, and then competed in the prestigious Tournament of Champions on Jan. 13-14. The Breakers went 3-2 on the trip and finished the tournament in sixth place.
Laguna defeated Dos Pueblos for a second time this season, winning the Jan. 12 game, 10-6. At the tournament, the Breakers beat Montebello, 7-5, and lost in overtime to Newport Harbor, 7-6, in pool play Jan. 13. On Saturday, they edged Santiago/Corona, 11-10, and lost to host Santa Barbara, 11-7.
“We had a goal of breaking into the top four and playing in the semifinals, so as a team we were disappointed,” Laguna Coach Ethan Damato said. “I think we learned a lot over the weekend and showed a lot of heart against the top competition around.”
Laguna is off until Jan. 27, when it plays a 3:15 p.m. nonleague game at Newport Harbor.

Boys’ Soccer
The Laguna Beach High boys’ soccer team suffered its first Orange Coast League loss of the season on Wednesday after getting edged, 2-1, by Godinez at Centennial Park in Santa Ana.
Joe Rousseau scored Laguna’s goal loss to Godinez.
“We always knew this was going to be tough, as Godinez has an excellent program with good players and coaching,” Laguna Coach Daniel Richards said. “After last year’s games, which were extremely one-sided in their favor, I’m delighted at how much pressure we put on the reigning league champions and really showed that we can compete against anyone in our league.”
The loss left Laguna at 1-1-1 in league and 5-2-3 overall.
The Breakers scored a 4-1 league win Jan. 13 over Calvary Chapel at Centennial Park. Chris Tellez scored twice and Reece Barton and Miguel Jaimes also scored. Laguna started its league season Jan. 11 and played visiting Estancia to a 2-2 tie. Barton and Rousseau both scored for the Breakers.
Laguna continues league play at 6:30 p.m. Friday hosting Costa Mesa at Guyer Field. The Breakers also are at home Wednesday for a 6:15 p.m. league match against Saddleback.

Girls’ Soccer
The Breakers struck first against host Godinez on Tuesday but had to settle for a 1-1 tie. Marina Paul scored 15 minutes into the match, but Godinez tied it 10 minutes before halftime.
The Breakers outshot the Grizzlies, 20-16.
Laguna began its league slate Jan. 12 at Centennial Park and battled Calvary Chapel to a scoreless tie. Goalkeeper Kylie George, a freshman, recorded the shutout.
The two results left the Breakers at 1-0-2 in league and 5-6-4 overall. They play a 3:15 p.m. league game at Saddleback on Tuesday and host Calvary Chapel at Guyer Field at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

Football
Juniors Drake Martinez and Robbie McInerny, two players who set individual records and had a big hand in helping the Laguna Beach High football team accomplish one of the program’s best records last fall, were named to the 2011 All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division team.
Martinez was named as one of six backs to the Offensive Team. Martinez set Laguna single-season records for rushing yardage (1,889), touchdowns (31) and points scored (188). Along the way, he established single-game record for points scored (32) and tied the record for touchdowns scored (five).
McInerny also went into the school record books. He set single-season records for kick scoring points (82) and point-after-touchdown points (76), and set single-game marks for PATs (eight).
“Robbie has shown a tremendous talent for kicking a football,” Laguna Coach Mike Churchill said. “During the season he kicked off and had 68 touchbacks. His talent was a great asset to our success this fall.”
“Drake is a football coach’s dream. He always works hard and gives his all in practice and games.”
