La Tempa earns baseball accolades

Huntington Beach High and Golden West College product Justin La Tempa, a senior pitcher at the University of Oregon, has been announced as the Pac-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week.

Additionally, La Tempa has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. national pitcher of the week after throwing a one-hitter in the Ducks’ 6-0 win over Washington State on Saturday.

La Tempa took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and finished with a career-high 10 strikeouts. He is now 4-2 with a 2.64 earned-run average for the Ducks, ranked No. 15 in the country.

White commits to Whitman

Huntington Beach High senior Meghan White has committed to play basketball at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., her father Brian said in an e-mail.

White, a 5-foot-11 forward/center, averaged 11.4 points and 13 rebounds per game this past season for the Oilers. She was third in the county in rebounding and led Huntington to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs. She was a first-team All-Sea View League selection.

White, who will be playing in the senior North-South County All-Star game Saturday at Concordia University, will join 2009 Edison grads Kelly Peterson and Mary Madden on the Whitman women’s basketball team. She has an academic scholarship.

Buffa to compete at sailing nationals

Huntington Beach native Karafaye Buffa is part of the Salve Regina University (Newport, R.I.) varsity sailing team, which has qualified to compete in the national championships for the first time in school history.

Salve Regina competed in Seattle in the national semifinals recently and qualified seventh; the top nine in the fleet of 18 made the national championships.

Salve will be heading to Wisconsin beginning May 25 to compete against 17 of the other top teams in the country.

Buffa, a sophomore at Salve Regina, attended Connelly High in Anaheim.

Keenan, Ratledge among ninth-place finishers in event

Fountain Valley High grad Brad Keenan and partner Casey Jennings tied for ninth over the weekend at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Santa Barbara Open, tying for the best finish among locals at the second AVP stop of the year.

Surf City resident Ed Ratledge and partner Ryan Mariano also tied for ninth.

Huntington resident Casey Patterson tied for 17th with Kevin Wong, as did former Golden West College standout Jeff Carlucci and his partner, Everett Matthews.

On the women’s side, Huntington residents Raquel Caulkins and Saralyn Smith each tied for 13th with their respective partners. Katie Jameson and Tracy Jones (formerly known as the Lindquist sisters) tied for 17th.

The Lindquist sisters, Katie and Tracy, are each married now.
